Is my macbook white keyboard burning ?

I've been using an Exo silicone protector in my white macbook keyboard for about 3 months and I think it is causing some overheat in the laptop. I've written this thread some time ago but I cancelled it cause I was afraid of making so much noise for nothing.

But now I think the problem can be really serious.

I've noticed some black spots (they look like the kind of one that appears when you put fire close to your hand or something white), when I put off the protector to clean the laptop.

The spots disappeared the first time I cleaned up, and I decided to cancel the thread. I don't want one more paranoid thread.

Yesterday I've put off the protector again and noticed the same kind of spots around the same places - and I guess there are more this time. It was very difficult to remove the spots using the Omniz Cleaner and I didn't get all the keys cleaned.

When you look at the protector out of the lap, you can see some dark areas right on the same keys that became "burnt" !

Do you think this protector is burning the keyboard ? I always use Istat pro to check the temps and never gets beyond 65 C. Anybody here with the same problem ?

I took some pictures but deleted them with the last thread. I'll make new one and post when I find a friend with a digital camera.

I sent this photos today for the protector's manufacturer and he told me to take my computer to an apple store. He also suggested to get off the cover and use a piece of plastic instead to see if the problem continues.

I'm thiking about taking the laptop to an authorized reseller, but I'm afraid they'll charge me just to take a look of it. We don't have Apple Stores in Brazil, only these resellers with bumped prices !

Well, whether it's 'burning' or otherwise I'd advise against using the cover ever again

It's quite possible that heat escapes through the keyboard and that the cover is essentially adding a layer of insulation to the machine. Or, the cover material could be reacting somehow with the keyboard material.

agreed, the white macbooks do get dirty, and is visable

I don't think its 'burning' - I think the macbooks vent some of their hot air through the keyboard, and thats just the accumulation of dirt from the venting - it doesn't get wiped away 'cuz your cover insulates it.


I get the same thing under my powerbook monitor too when I run it in clamshell mode.

The manufacter himself told me it could be dirt acumulation from the coolers below the keyboard. I agree it could be that, but this spots really looks like fire. Now I'm jealous about the ones, like my girlfriend, that have choosen the black one.

I got a disassembled macbook picture from ifixit.com. If the spots are always at the same places, that would be the ventilation channels, right ? They appear mostly around the "M" and "3" keys, and they don't exactly coincide with the cooler position. It's obvious that the air doesn't flow only in the cooler's region, but all around it. Anyone know about that ? Does the ventilation go through this keys ?
