I've been waiting for iMac updates for a few months before I buy. While I don't need the system immediately, I don't really want to wait till Leopard comes out. Are the latest Intel Core 2 Duo updates going to be it for a while? Or do you think we can expect anything else anytime soon?

Right now I'm looking at the 20" iMac with this config:

iMac, 20-inch, Intel Core 2 Duo
2.16GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
250GB Serial ATA Drive
SuperDrive 8X (DVD+R DL/DVD±RW/CD-RW)
Apple Wireless Keyboard & wireless Mighty Mouse + Mac OS X (US English)
ATI Radeon X1600/128MB VRAM
2GB 667 DDR2 SDRAM - 2x1GB

Its the age-old story of something newer always coming out later on down the line. If you've got the money, and you need the machine now, buy it!

Ity will be again but it just was so now is a very good time, I'd get one now if I could!

Why wouldnt you buy now? OF COURSE BUY NOW!!! BUY BUY BUY! ..Ok let me put my coffee down..

No, definitely wait for the Core 3 Duo, it's supposed to be incrementally faster.

Leopard is still about half a year away, and that's a long time for processors. So yeah, there could easily be another round of speed bumps around then.

The iMac that came out today, however, will be able to take advantage of all the announced Leopard features, so it's no reason to fret.

you don't help him with saying those things people

Definitly buy one now if you want one... it won't be upgraded for like 4-6 months at least!

Nothing's coming out for months, and nothing major for a longer while after that. If you need it, buy now. It's no longer a "maybe it'll be next week, or next month" sort of thing.

Sarcasm on this thread is just dry and un-funny. To the OP, buy your iMac now, there will always be something new so buy when you need it.

Only because we see these questions EVERY DAY.

Why is the Mac community so decision-impaired on making a purchase?

To the OP: The iMacs were just updated today. Why would you think they'd be updated again ("soon")? If you're ready to buy, then buy.

I bought my iMac in May of this year.
Yes I am bummed looking at the new iMacs.
Yet I am still very very happy with my purchase.
You have 3 choices:

1) Be like me
2) Wait for every new update and never own an iMac
3) Buy an iMac, never visit MacRumors or Apple, and live in the denial that your iMac is the latest/greatest forever.

well let's see, the new iMacs are hours old at this point, they are literally the newest & fastest iMacs available... but yeah, you should probably wait another 12-18 months in case something else faster comes along.

I swear there is a very large base of users on this forum that have no intention of actually pulling the trigger and buying. I'm sure these same people have been sitting on their money waiting for a g5 powerbook. Now they just get off on starting "should I buy?" threads.

BUY THE DAMN MACHINE, in the time you've wasted I hope your at least making interest off the money your not spending.

In all fairness, the OP started this thread before the update.

It's one thing to ask about the likelihood of an update when you're very close to buying or asking about the long term upgrade path.

I was a nervous wreck yesterday buying the MacBook for my daughter.

I'm still hoping for an update before it ships.

Either way it will stil be a great machine, but of course, I'd prefer the latest revision.

The OP asked about the iMacs released today:

The timing is perfect. I convinced my wife we need a new PC and we decided on a Mac (I just showed it to her online - it sold itself). She's just started at Uni, so now we can get the new 24" model, with student discount. Sweet!

If I'd had the need when the first Intel iMacs came out I'd have bought one then and been very happy, and still be very happy, but this is some very nice icing on the cake.

thanks

Thanks to all who provided helpful advice. When you're looking at spending close to 2 grand AND are switching from a PC, it's a big decision. I've been waiting for a while now, and thought I'd test the waters one last time before I took the plunge.
