Is one dead pixel okay?

I received my very first apple computer yesterday. It was the 27inch i7 with 8gig of ram. I turned it on for the first time and it looked perfect. When the loading wheel came up on the white screen I noticed a dead pixel right next to it. I looked over the rest of the screen and I could not find another one.

I ended up calling and asking for a new imac. The first person on the phone said they usually only do replacements for 4 or more dead pixels. After I explained that it is right in the middle and I noticed it the first time I turned it on he forwarded me to someone else and they got me a shipping code. I not am waiting another week for a new computer.

Is it normal for people to return their machines for one dead pixel? The guy on the phone made it sound like it was no big deal. $2,400 is a big deal though...

Did I make the right choice to return it?

Well, 27" iMac has 3 686 400 pixels so if one of them is dead or stuck, it's not a surprise. It's your choice but there is chance that the new one will have more of them or other issues.

I didn't have any dead pixels on my imac 27 or macbook pro, but I did have a dead pixel on my hp envy 17, and that went right back to the manufacture. If you're not happy, why deal with it. I felt the exact same way as you, and when I got my new computer I was happy I did.

IMO, a dead pixel is like a stone chip on a windshield - on a brand new "off the lot" vehicle. If the stone chip in either corner, no big deal. But when its "in the middle" of the windshield, one will see it every time. And, it will constantly remind them their "brand new" product is NOT perfect. If it were me, I'd ask for replacement - if the dot was in the center of my vision... To me, you are doing the right thing...

If it makes you feel any better, I have one dead pixel on my 27" iMac down in the doc area.

Although, it's not distracting enough for me to go through the mess of repackaging my entire iMac and returning it for that...My OCD tells me I should stick with the iMac i purchased.

One dead pixel on a new machine or display is one too many. Get it replaced with one that isn't defective. If they give you any crap ask someone at an Apple store to show you a desktop, display, or notebook on display with a dead pixel. They won't find one. Case closed.

Depends who you end up dealing with. My apple store told me that they'll replace any display which has a dead pixel within a couple of inches of the centre of the screen.

However they said if you have more than one anywhere on the display, then they'd replace it.

Dead pixels are a bummer, I agree. But for one, if that's the machine's only problem, I'd probably live with it.

My $1400 30" Dell 3008WFP didn't have any dead pixels when I first got it but after about 6 months it developed one dead sub-pixel at the level of the dock. It was easy to live with (the green element was dead; red and blue sub-pixels still worked, so it wasn't always visible. Looked purple-red on a white background but that was about the only time I could see it).

Happens. But for more than one, I'd look at a replacement.
