Is Powerbook G4 enough?

Wondering if im able to run windows programs (mostly video editing apps) on Powerbook using Virtual PC? If so what is minimum requirement ( is 1 GB RAM enough or do i need 2 GB?; perhaps ill need 7200 RPM hdd?).
And you guys who already have experience with running windows apps on mac, what is your general impression? Do windows programs run properly on mac?

VPC is slower than a PC and eats RAM. It is usable for most programs, but I doubt you'll have a very good experience trying to use it for video editing. Use iMovie to edit your videos or purchase a version of Final Cut. You'll be much happier.

I have a 1.67 GHz PB with 1.5 GB RAM and a 5400 RPM hard drive. iMovie runs very well.
 
if you need to run a lot of windows apps, just get a pc. you'll be much happier in the end, and you can get a mac mini or something if you want to have a mac as well.

I don't think a Power Mac G5 Quad with 16 GB of memory would edit videos on VPC very well. It would be usable, but it won't be as good as iMovie running natively. Why can't you use iMovie?
 
Well, iMovie doesnt have the same features as Adobe Premiere Pro...
Perhaps, ill just need to get Final Cut Pro ; hopefully it ll run properly on powerbook...

Btw, what about Motion 2 ? Isn`t it a bit slow on Powebook?
 
What windows software are you trying to run, what Video Editing program?
I agree with the others to use iMovie, it works very well, if you need somthing stronger with more features, get Final Cut Express HD or Final Cut Pro If your broadcasting


If your new to macs iMovie is a good app for general video editing and comes free as a part of the iLife Suite on every new mac.
 
If I were you, I honestly would just use Final Cut Pro. Like a few people have said in prior posts, it will run MUCH faster, and be MUCH more stable.

Any time you have emulation involved, (i.e. Adobe premier on Virtual PC) it is and never will be as fast or as stable as running something natively (i.e Final Cut Pro on Mac OS X).

Just my $.02.
 
I have Final Cut Pro and Final Cut Express - I couldn't be happier, get 'em. you'll want to throw out that Adobe stuff, cause Final Cut Pro is awesome!

switch to fcp.

i use fcp, dvd studio pro, after effects on my 1.5ghz, 1gb ram 17" powerbook. it's sufficient enough for me. actually it renders faster then my dual 867mhz g4 hehe.

i've tried motion but i dont think it's as comprehensive as after effects yet. my opinion.

Yep, that's without any doubt the way to go.

That depends what you'd call "ok". :) First, it's important to understand that Motion is no video editing app like final cut (altough you can use it as such if you've got way to much processing power). Motion is best suited for short animated clips (20 sec or so) with some effects and particles. That's where it really shines. But whenever you start to work on larger clips, you will inevitably be limited by your processor, available RAM and especially the GPU and amount of VRAM on your video card. So in short: Motion 2 "runs" on the current PowerBooks, but you don't want to use it for cutting.
 
or if your in love with premier you can just run the mac version of it, they stopped developing it but 6 should do, but as others have said fcp owns, adobe stoped with premier as no mac users used it because fcp is better in every way, vpc is a waste of time and HD space, besides if your dead keen on premier just wait for an intel powerbook.
 
Well , Ive already ordered FCP so ill learn how to use it. Besides after i tried mac im not likely turning back to pc :eek: :cool:

ive heard even better things about FCP

Good choice :)

But AFAIK you can get Premiere for mac; though I also think it isn't updated anymore. FCP is very close to Premiere though. IMHO it's actualy better.
 
adobe stopped developing premiere for mac awhile ago. the announcement came when adobe introduced the premiere pro with an famous/infamous article that said adobe apps runs faster on pc than on mac.

motion is not for editing. motion is the equivelant of adobe after effects.

If you want to do video editing via Virtual PC ... you may have the wrong computer. Get a PC.
