I have a simple question: Is Steam (i mean the client) running stable on OS X Mavericks/Yosemite DP/beta? I mean buying games, request friend message, surfing into the client, check options and so on. On Windows 7 the client is running with no problems, but i will running only OS X Mavericks (later Yosemite) in the future - without windows.

Thanks. :)

Steam works just fine for me with Mavericks 10.9.4 and I have not seen any problems at all in daily use.

Reports in this thread indicate it is working fine in the Yosemite beta:

I wouldn't worry about Steam working in Yosemite because even if there was an issue or issues, it would get fixed.

Works fine in Mavericks for me. However sometimes it seems to ramp up CPU usage for no reason and requires me to quit out of the application. This happens once every few weeks and I do a lot of gaming and have Steam open 24/7 though.

re: Steam

Yeah... I've been using Steam with OS X 10.9.x since pretty much the beginning. It works, basically. I've had a few issues with it over time though. Definitely seen the "memory/resource leak" problem the code seems to have, where leaving Steam running for long periods of time results in the system getting unresponsive and needing a reboot.

Also had once or twice where Steam tried to download an update to apply automatically when it was restarted, but it didn't apply properly -- causing it to give Finder the spinning beach ball every time it was launched. The fix for that was to trash Steam from my Apps folder and reinstall as though it was a new installation.

Steam

It works for me on Mavericks. But it has never been flawless. I never boot it with 100% confidence. Often it just needs to be updated. But sometimes it doesn't connect and it keeps me off line. Or it pulls up some other random alert.

Considering Steam is doing nothing for me other than providing a folder in which I select generally single player games that are played off line, I find it confusingly slow, buggy and erratic.

But it definitely isn't broken. And I continue to buy games through it since they are much cheaper than through the App Store or Mac Gaming Store.

It can have the odd bizarre moment and it is not as Mac like as some software with the odd rough edges but never anything that prevents me from enjoying playing.

Since Feral started developing on Steam we have Steam clients (and logged in) installed on all our machines. I'd say even with the minor issues the app is reliable and the extra social features are pretty reliable. If you like the social side or online gameplay then I would personally say that Steam offers the best features in this area on the Mac (or Windows) right now.

I'm using it here on Yosemite Public Preview 2 without any issues. Though have only really been playing War-game Red Dragon on it, so can't vouch for other games.

This Mac is a Mac Book Pro Early 2011 17inch screen.

FYI the operation of Steam and the operation of games are separate things, Steam is just a launcher so Steam working does not mean all your games will work but that is the same no matter where you buy your games.

Hi Edwin,

Agree and disagree :)

Agree once the games are running, in the most part they have nothing to do with Steam apart for some DRM aspects.

The other part of steam that does affect the games though is the download and updating of the games that you have bought as that is controlled by Steam (if that is where you bought them).

From my experience the download and updating part is working fine as well as the purchase aspect.

I don't have any friends :-( so can't comment on the friends / social aspect.

Running on 10.10 PB2 and the only occasional issue I have is when it fails to Play a game, I get the window up saying that Steam is launching the game, but it fails to go any further. If I try and quit Steam at this point it complains that it is updating Cloud saves, but this never finishes (well I gave it a good 15 minutes before force quitting Steam). Reloading Steam lets me carry on with no issues.

Possibly. Seems to be related to auto-downloads in any case. Turned off the scheduled downloading and now don't have issues.
