The apps they suggest on the main page seem to be not worthwhile. The store is loaded with third party apps that seem to be deceptive in that they are cheap knockoffs of legitimate programs. None of the arcade games peak my interest. Am I alone in my perceptions?

I don't find much in the app store, but then I don't really expect to get much in there to be honest. I prefer to seek out what I need from the developers directly. So much software out there.

The only apps I do purchase are those where the developer site directs me to the app store as the only option to purchase.

I can usually find what I need outside of the App Store, and my games are mainly covered by sources like Steam and GOG. I get the impression that the App Store mainly caters to those who aren't as savvy about venturing online to begin with (aka Apple's ideal target audience), asides from exclusive apps, and maybe devs understand that too

I usually use Homebrew if I need to install something, I think you're right in that the perception of the App Store is low-quality in nature. And why exactly should I buy a game like Civilization from the App Store, when I can buy it on Steam?

Well I use my most applications on Mac App Store and love their applications, but many of softwares does not want to put there because of developer license(The thing is, you'll buy for iOS and it does apply to make apps for all platforms so I don't see a big reason not to buy there...)

Not to mention that the reviews are all fake because Apple deletes any negative reviews so you never know what you're getting your foot into until you install and try the app.

I just had a look at a few apps and there are plenty of negative reviews for each so not sure where you are getting that from.

Yes. Apple's been driving good developers away for years now
It shows.
You know there is trouble when the pinnacle of word processors is that gimped up version of Pages they came out with for iPads a few years ago, and never bothered to fix.
It's hard to make a living selling through Apple store anymore.

I'll give the store credit, it made it possible to recreate Dashboard in a better fashion (as part of the desktop and not separate). Plenty of great skeuomorphic widgets.

I never cared for 'recommended' anyway. I always just hit search and download and done!

I think the only two things i ever bought from the app store was notability and that app that let you snap windows in half
