I've heard that you can get Civilization 5 either through iTunes or Steam, but the iTunes version is crippled and has no multiplayer. I don't plan on playing Civ 5 anyway, but does anyone know whether the App Store is the best way to buy Europa Universalis 3 Chronicles or are there benefits to buying it over Steam or CD-ROM? Thanks!

The Mac App store is the last place I'd buy games...
and I'll add to that the two games I'm currently developing I'll be selling in multiple venues, including the Mac App Store, but I'd always recommend Steam over Mac App Store... why get a Mac Only version that may not be kept up with when you can get SteamPlay for the same price and get the Windows and Mac version both?

If you have a choice of the same game through Mac App Store or Steam, I think Steam is the way to go.
I have a game available through the Mac App Store now, but I am making it available soon through other services such as Mac Game Store and Steam. The Mac App Store is great for some games and for a while there is quite a bit of traffic that will see your game. But all too quickly, it falls off the face of the earth. When you update the game, Apple used to 'bump' your game back to the top in that category giving you an incentive to keep updating it. But they have stopped that practice and games seem to be forgotten fairly quickly. Apparently this was due to some developers just adding things like icon updates to get their games bumped. Oh well...

Sometimes it will decide my internet is down, yet inside steam I can still play a ubisoft game that talks to Ubisofts drm server. Umm ok, and oh look I can bring up steam store in a browser just fine,
Sometimes a game just won't run up. OK quit steam, force quit the app that has not yet booted, rerun steam try again. No luck? Restart my computer, rerun steam, try again? No luck, /shrug try later, try tomorrow.
Yes sometimes it does indeed run for weeks with zero issues.
I buy stuff from the app store and steam depending on my inclination, certainly their is no equivalent of the steam sales on the app store, but that does not change the fact that on any given day I don't know if steam will work, it just mostly does.

Back when I was a windows guy, literally every game I bought had some kind of issue with my computer, mostly steam forgetting to install certain files. Also, steam would be no help in the situation at all. It would take forever for games to load, and downloading them was a nightmare. It would constantly lock up and freeze and even crash more than a few times. It's a nightmare to run on my macbook air as well, I've installed it and deleted it numerous times.
Most of the games I bought in the Mac App Store (I have around >30 games) were cheaper there than on the Steam Store. I bought for example The Darkness 2 for 11,99, when other Stores including Steam wanted 49,99. Of course, now you can buy it elsewhere cheap too, but I speaking of the time about a half year ago. I also bought some games for only <3, for example Knights of the Old Republic, World of Goo, Trine, Prey, Modern Combat Domination and Quake 4.
The Mac App Store always had better deals, but you have to visit it often or daily, because there are super cheap deals which last only 24 hours.
Of course it is good to have the Windows and Mac Version with Steam, but I am an Apple user, I have Bootcamp, but I like Mac OS. So I simply don't care, I buy it where it is cheap. It don't feels different to play on Mac OS, because when the game starts, I play the game and not the OS
I like Steam, but the Mac client needs some work/optimization. When I run it in OS X (SL) it's really slow overall. On the same machine in Bootcamp Win7, it's a lot faster and more responsive...
Also, Steam can be quite depressing when you see all the games you're missing out on as a Mac user
