Here's why I ask. I have a 57" Hitachi RPTV, ~3yrs old. Input one has HDMI and component. The hdmi connection is the primary. I have my Dish Network 622 plugged in and it's always on (active ). Which means I can't really can't use the components on input 1. Input 2 is for my 360. If the Apple TV off when not in use, I can plug it into the hdmi port and use component cables for my 622.

AppleTV itself is always on, but the it stops sending signals to TV through HDMI port when you put it to sleep. It could be OK to connect it into your HDMI port.
