I've had my iphone 3G for two years now and the front glass has not a single scratch on it. The back: is scratched into oblivion, as a result of having it naked for a while, and having it in a ruberish case before putting it in a hard one. So I plan to start fresh with #4 and keep it that way, and since apple claims the back is made of glass, if I buy a bumper will the phone be scratch proof? are diamonds and sand the only thing that scratch glass?

Nope a sand can scratch a glass.. and therefore the back of the iPhone 4 is NOT scratch proof..
