Just wondering, because the iPhone 8 came out almost two years ago and the iPhone 8 Product Red came out last year in the Spring (I think it did). I notice there was not a new phone with the traditional iPhone design last year. Could it be possible that they are releasing those phones in the Spring now and keeping the "X" design going in the Fall traditional release?

Would really love to have a new "Plus" phone with the traditional design. My X is practically unusable (randomly checking my emails for deletion and opening restaurant apps and putting together orders).

Pretty sure the 8 was also released in the fall. As far as "traditional", it's quite likely that the X design is basically the new traditional design going forward.

The 8 was released in the fall, but they released it in Product Red in the Spring. Just really weird that they seem to have dropped the traditional design completely like that without explicitly saying so.

Why would Apple have to say anything with any design changes? Don’t you think it’s fairly clear that they’re moving forward with the new X design?

Every new iPhone since the 4S has been released in the Fall, with the exception of the SE, which was the sole anomaly*.

* A new color variant like the Product Red does not equal a new phone.

So it's possible? Got it.

It's not weird at all. Buy an 8+ now if you really want a 'traditional' iPhone.

If your X is having issues, take it to Apple. It's not an inherent flaw in the design.

A set of spring colored XR phones and maybe product red XS would be nice to boost up some late sales.

They outright said during the X launch that it’s design represents the future of the iPhone. I don’t know how much more clearly you’d expect them to say that the “traditional” design is done.

The product red 8 was just a simple way to boost sales mid-cycle by introducing a new colour. It’s not an uncommon practice. They did it with the 7 too, and other companies do it as well.

Maybe a slightly better chance than this guy had:

The iPhone development cycle has been oriented around Fall releases for at least seven to eight years now, and maybe more. There is a well-established established process and cadence.

That includes not only the overall phone designs, but major internal components like the SoC, and supplier components like the screens, camera modules, secondary chips, etc., all of which must have finalized designs and be produced in mass quantities. As impressive as the capabilities of the Asian suppliers are (which is why it would be be difficult to move production elsewhere), they can't work miracles.

iPhones already conform to a tick/tock design rotation that helps ease the burden of annual releases.

To deviate further from the established product cycle would require effort, and money, and without compelling reasons to do so, will not occur.

Just seems like they've gotten a bit more unpredictable. From releasing two updated models in the traditional design and an X model, about two years ago, to releasing 3 different X models last year. Went from the 8 straight to the 10 and are now on the 10s.

I don’t really get what your motivation is to argue with basic facts, but whatever that issue is, it’s very much a you problem.

Apple launches new iPhones in the fall. Plain and simple. The product red 8 plus was an extra color. Not a new iPhone.

With XR already available in Product Red, it seems unlikely there will be a Spring iPhone color release

I expect Apple to eventually release some kind of updated "classic" phone to take the SE's place, but not sure when.

But that doesn’t suggest that Apple won’t release an iPhone XS in another color variant to boost in sales as well. I realize they did not do that with the 2017 iPhone X, but given the circumstances have changed with iPhone sales and China’s Economic conditions, it could happen.

Especially considering that red is considered a lucky colour in China, is it not?

You’re correct, Red is a very popular color in China. It actually symbolizes ‘Fortune, Luck and Joy’, which is why they feature this color so heavily in China. In theory, it would only benefit Apple to have a secondary color for the XS if they decided that, especially being China is their second largest market.

I don't get the motivation to assert absolutes when we're dealing with opinions here, but I guess that's the internet. Stop getting upset because your opinion is not being taken for a crystal ball. Relax.

It may happen, it may not. Until an official announcement is made, nothing is set in stone, whether you like it or not.

But as far as "belief" goes, it seems that unless there's really something to point to it being otherwise, the usual pattern seems to be the one to go with.

Right, I'd bet money that there will be a new one out September. That they won't do anything else as well? Don't know.
