Is the Canon 6d THE Thing?

For me it was.
Everyone shoots differently and everyone requires different things.
For me it was the best combination in a camera. It isn't the be all and end all camera but it came top of the list for the criteria that I needed.
The camera is just the tool and you use it to the best of it's ability to get the shots you want.
You might have some people say that glass is the most important factor but there were elements that the 6D body offered that meant it was a better upgrade than just buying new glass.
I have since built up a nice selection of 5 lenses and I am confident that this is all I will need for the foreseeable future.
Worst case scenario, if it doesn't work for you sell it on for maybe $100-200 loss. This is still cheaper than renting it for the same period and it's worth more getting the right camera than trying to stay with something that just doesn't work for you and trying to save money or 'justify' your purchase.
Your question was quite open ended so I don't know if I have offered anything of value !
As with all things, it depends on what you hope to do with it. I went full frame a year ago and have really enjoyed it. Hard to quantify what I gained but it feels like I have more artistic control. It's made me think more about what picture I want to take. Depth of field is more variable, sometimes when I'm taking a trap shot working on program, it isn't what I expected. That's good as it has made me slow down a bit and think. Get out and take some photos, only you can decide if it was worth it. Enjoy.

Nice size, especially with a 40 mm pancake on front.
Excellent high ISO shooting.
Glitch is if you leave Internal GPS selected (instead of Disable) it will drain your battery, possibly very fast depending on your setting for how often the GPS updates. So you have to select GPS Disable every time you set aside the 6D.
This should be fixed in the next firmware update, IMO.

I had some nice pentax lenses, even some DA* (equivalente to L line in Canon).
But I was only shooting with my 35mm, and I really wanted more frame (i.e. a real 35mm not a 1.5x35mm).
I got it really cheap with Cybermonday, so, if it's not the deal, I'll sell it for a 70d or a 7d.

Define "the thing" and we can let you know if you're on the right track! Somehow, I suspect you may be one of those that is disappointed, if you are already asking this after having only recently purchased it. Just a hunch.
My thoughts are that no camera out there is capable of being given the title of "the thing." There are different tools for different needs and different ways of working with those tools as to actually give you an enjoyable and satisfying experience.
After seeing some medium format work, I'm envious of that, but then I see Doylem knocking out glorious picture after picture on his trusty ages old, technically inadequate (for those that need to have the latest and greatest) camera and simple kit lens and I feel grateful and lucky to have what I have to work with and can only hope to be able to knock out pictures worthy of having the 6D.

As already said, it depends on your own perspective and what each individual wants. It's at the 'budget' end of FF's so never going to compete with the big boys ( I include the 5D Mark III in these even though it's 'relatively cheap), but is still an excellent camera. No doubt it will give better IQ than most ( if not all) APS-C's, but can lack in areas such as AF speed and video compared to some of the higher end, but still cheaper) APS-C's apparently.
The trouble is though that we can get bogged down too much comparing this that and the other between models, and at the end of the day most DSLR's are capable of producing stunning images. If you're happy with the camera and how it operates that's all that matters.

If I remember correctly is something along the lines of a Nikon D200 or something similar. I think I am right in saying that it is old but it wasn't a base model at it's time.
I think this is a big issues that a lot of people consider it a budget FF camera yet it out performs the 5Diii in high ISO and centre point AF. Two things that were more important to me that a large number of focus points and higher resolution.
I reiterate my previous point that the 6D does certain things that the others don't and it should never be seen as a budget option as frankly at over £1000 no camera should be seen as a budget option
It's amazing. I personally won't be shooting lots of action shots, just stills or slow moving objects...with prolly lots of poor lighting. I also don't like the look of flash so 6D is great with the high ISO. I got it yesterday and took like 300 shots tonight, hard to take a bad photo with it
The video has looked great so far too, even if I saw moire or aliasing here and there I don't think I can be upset about it. It's not a Mark III but it's definitely no slouch.

It's not a Mark III but it's definitely no slouch.Hence why I put budget it commas. As you say nothing over £1000 is budget in my eyes either, but in the scheme of FF cameras it is a 'budget' FF.
I've not used one to be fair, but every test I've seen says that the 5DM3 blows the 6D out of the water in terms of AF so am surprised about your findings.
The low light performance is pretty special though. It's performance like this that makes me wish I could afford FF.

Can't tell whether you're being sarcastic, but hopefully you read more than our Ken to get insight on the camera
and hopefully, too, you made the purchase because it has features you know you need (or just plain want). Beyond that, as others have said, it's A thing, and only you can answer if it's THE thing for you. It is, after all, only a tool.
I used one for a bit and fell in love with it. I almost got one but my computer died and well...6D had to go back :/ One thing that I love about it is that its like a 5D Mk.II but improved and like a 5D Mk.III but different. It uses SD cards which I prefer for a handful of reasons. It also has WiFi and GPS which sounded stupid to me at first but after a while I realized it was pretty awesome and useful...I can't tell you how many times Ive taken photos and clients or people want a copy right away...with my 550D I can certainly throw the SD card in my rMBP which I carry with my everywhere and send it off quick but thats a pain..if you have an iPhone or android phone the EOS app lets you transfer off quickly without having to physically do anything with the card or adapters.
While you might think "well the 5D Mk.II is in the price range or the Mk.III is not that much more" the price gap is getting bigger and I personally find the 6D to be a better choice for me...now the 5D Mk.III has wayyyy better autofocus, the 5D Mk.III really is Canon's flagship blue plate camera, I would even argue that Canon puts more focus on it over the 1D cameras but the 6D is amazing. Its ISO performance is awesome too and going from a low end rebel to a 6D is a smoother transition IMO. I just wish I had more time with it, spent more time playing with its pictures than the actual camera but I loved it. If and when I have a means to get one soon I certainly will!
