I'm assuming that this works like auto-brightness, but I'm not sure if the screen temperature is supposed to get warmer or cooler on its own when Night Shift is enabled. Or am I supposed to only manual change it thru the slider in the Settings app? It doesn't do it automatically based on the situation I'm in? (How dark the room I'm in etc, etc)

It can be set to turn on and off automatically at sunset and sunrise or whatever preset times you which. It does not work by ambient light.

What I mean is: does the temperature get warmer than the default setting when enabled?
Default meaning off?
It is warmer than when it is off. But it doesn't automatically scale itself once on. It's static based on where you set your slider.
I think only the new iPad can do white balance based on ambient light!

That kind of temperature correction works only on the new iPad Pro and True Tone display.
Night Shift keep the same color tone until deactivated (manually or automatically)

It does automatically activate based on the situation....the situation is time.

The darkness of the room doesn't matter, night shift is to aid in sleep cycles. If you are in a dark room in the middle of the day you most likely don't want it active.
