Hey everyone I have an iPad Air 2 and have had this replacement model nearly a year and a half now. :)

And I have used and press on the home button countless many many many times for things like taking lots lots and lots of screenshots and switching in between and close apps/games things like that.

But unfortunately recently in the last 2/3 weeks every now and again the home button when I press on it mainly going from sleep to the lock screen it fails to respond and does not do anything the 1st time which I have to press it again which it does work the 2nd time round.

But I am definitely getting really really worried that the home button is dying/failing already despite me having this iPad Air 2 replacement model for only 1 year and a half.:(

So if the home button actually breaks dies in the near future then I am definitely really really screwed because I won't be able to take any screenshots and switch in between and close apps/games on my iPad.

And all so I am looking to still use my iPad Air 2 for a least until next year 2019 which in 2019 I think I will be looking and upgrading and getting a new and much more better and powerful iPad(most likely the new 2018 iPad Pro 10.5), So yeah it will definitely still be quite a long time using this iPad Air 2.

To be honest lately I have been trying to avoid using the home button every now again and not use my iPad Air 2 and use my Surface Pro 4 and my LG G6 smartphone instead because so I be able to use the home button in the future with no problems on my iPad in the future and have heard from quite a few iPad users that the home button is not very durable/strong and breaks dies easily.

And I do try to press the home button very very softly and carefully on my iPad Air 2 but every now and again I do press it hard but not too hard at times especially when taking a screenshot or switching in between and closing apps/games.

I would like to know Is the home button dying/failing on my iPad Air 2?? Is this a sign?? I really really hope not its dying/failing already!!!!:(

And if the home button actually breaks and dies is there a good alternative to the home button?? And should I take it to the place(PC World/Currys) that I bought it and get it checked out and get it repaired(I have AppleCare protection as well)?? And iPad users have you had this problem before on your iPad?? And how will I take screenshots on my iPad Air 2 if the home button breaks dies?? o_Oo_O

I’ve always thought the home button was the weakest link in the design and most likely point of failure. I have much hope the next generation redesign will get rid of it, as rumored.

Any workaround will not be satisfactory long term. I’d take your iPad to your closest Apple Store and have them evaluate it, especially as you have Apple Care coverage. They should repair it at no charge, as this should never really happen.

I actually like the Home Buttom, it just very useful and very convient. I would not like iPhone X like gesture, especially I am using my iPad in landscape mode attached with my Keyboard. I hate having need touch my screen just to go back to home screen.

I don’t like it because it’s mechanical. It can potentially get stuck or fail if liquid gets accidentally poured on it, as well as the tension can get weak over time. Just one thing that can easily go wrong (as shown by the OP, unfortunately). The power button on the side is enough mechanical pressing for me.

I really had no problem with Home Buttom at all with all the iPhones and iPads I had. I had over 10 iOS devices over years, I never had any issue with home buttom. I know that it could be the point of failure, assistive touch will help solve any home buttom issue.

I have the iPad setup as laptop where the iPad is attached with keyboard and a case. The keyboard has home buttom key where I usually press anyway.

I would hate if Apple decide to ditch home buttom instead of using gesture. I don't want have to lift my arm just to go back home screen.

I would love if Apple got rid of it. It’s old technology. Time to move on. Maybe your arm needs a little exercise once in a while :).

Don't worry. iOS does not support mouse or trackpad. I have to constantly touching the screen while I am operating the iPad. It is pain in the neck at best. Apple advistasing iPad can be replacement of PC, but if you have to constantly lifting arm just to operating iPad, then it is not the PC replacement.

If they choose to enable mouse or trackpad support, I would have no problem with them get ride of the home buttom.

Also keep in mind, iPad is very large to operate. iPhone X like gesture would not work with things like iPad. Holding iPad one hand is already hard enough. You really need two hands for iPhone X like gesture. If you have to hold the iPad and other hand is busying for something, you will have very hard time exits to home screen

So what you‘re saying is you‘ve been using it as intended. Good :)

For starters, did you restart your iPad yet? (Not a joke, I had this happen to me on iPad Air before, unresponsive Home button etc. to just having the issue vanish after a restart!)

Next, you can treat yourself to a virtual Home button. You can activate it under Settings, just pull down and search for AssistiveTouch. Set it up as you like and enjoy!

TL;DR: Restart your iPad. If that helps, good, if not, activate AssistiveTouch in Settings. Hope that helps :) Let us know!
