Is the i7 iMac sold in retail stores?

I tried searching but couldn't find an answer...

Are the i7 iMacs sold in retail stores? or are those only available online?

And if I want to upgrade the RAM later on, is it okay to add 2 x 4GB chips (for a total of 12GB RAM), or are all 4 slots supposed to have the same amount installed?

They're sold in Apple stores, and select retailers, such as Best Buy, and J&R Music and B&H Photo in New York. I'm sure there are others.

They don't carry the i7 in retail Apple stores... just online. You may get lucky and find one, but by and large, you'll have to buy online. They do however carry the i5 model.

I've never seen an I7 machine in a Best Buy store and we have 3 local and I was told at our Apple store that I would have to order online if I wanted an I7, and that was 2 different Apple stores in Dallas/Ft.Worth area.

This is the only reason I picked up the i5 instead. I just didn't want to wait 2-3 weeks for the computer to ship then IF the screen was bad to take it back or ship it off again, my local 2 stores had plenty of i5's in stock in case I needed to do a swap out.

and if I went with just benchmark performance.
i5 w/ upgraded ram ($110 at newegg for 4gb 1333) put out better #'s than the i7 w/ 1066.
Yes I know an i7 with the same ram would post larger but just saying , saving $90 for a little faster performance and you wouldn't have to wait 2-3 weeks.

Apple stores do not order product for customer delivery.

True, but any Apple Store or reseller can order a build-to-order system for the customer, but it is delivered to the store for customer pick-up. You will have to remember that you won't be able to change your mind once it has been ordered though.
