Is the iPad 10.5, "out-dated" in terms of performance?

I've seen the benchmarks, however, for someone like myself using this for their masters to take notes (Still cant find what the best not taking is), listening to all my music and watching netflix, and the possible game like SimCity Buildit -- would this pad be quick enough? Response enough? To run current and maybe 6 months from now games

Or should I stick with the 12.9 LTE and pray for an unbent one? I like the screen realstate for notes and a sidekick to my 15 MBP.

I have a 10.5 and just bought an 11”. Side by side, I can’t tell a difference in speed. Both lightning fast. As a matter of fact, I’m thinking of returning the 11 and just sticking with the 10.5. But dang, I love the 11’s facial recognition and bigger screen and thinner form factor, so we’ll see what I end up keeping. Either way, I’ll be happy. The 10.5 is one fast tablet!!

Depends upon your definition of "outdated". If your definition of outdated is not being the fastest most capable, then yes, the 10.5 is outdate. If you define outdated as not being able to handle current tasks, then no, it isn't.

For your purposes I'd say that the 10.5 is fine. I have the 2018 iPad (non-Pro) and do all of that and more and have absolutely no problems. In my capacity of Institutional Research, I make heavy use of a bluetooth keyboard and Apple Pencil with the 2018 iPad daily... even split window multitasking. It's great!

I use GoodNotes for notes but NoteShelf 2 is another fine option.

The responsiveness of the Apple Pencil (1st gen) is stellar. Absolutely perfect. I've added a matte screen protector to eliminate fingerprints and improve the "feel" of the Pencil on the screen. On the bare glass, it is too slippery for my liking.

Regarding transferring handwritten notes to text, all of the major note apps (GoodNotes, Noteshelf 2, Nebo, etc.) all can convert handwriting to text. Noteshelf 2 can convert handwriting "in place", whereas GoodNotes requires one to first select the handwriting and specify to convert it (copied to the clipboard). You can then past it onto the same page, or onto another app.

I don't typically convert my handwriting because I write in all caps (holdover to the days when I had to hand write source code on coding sheets that would then be used for code reviews and punch cards) and the handwriting conversion function in these apps would convert the text to all caps.

I tend to keep it all in handwritten form (since they have the capability of searching the text) and only convert those things I really need to. If you have a more traditional handwriting style, all these apps will do a fantastic job.

10.5 is not underpowered.
You don’t have to pray “for an unbent 12.9”. Outside the magical realm of this forum, in the real world, most iPad Pros are not bent.

No, not outdated. You can’t go wrong with either, but I much prefer the new design. If you want to go larger, I’d say go with the new Pro’s considering they are more compact. The bending thing is way overblown so I wouldn’t even worry about that.

Nope, it’s the other way around, most people don’t really have issues. Check a store and see if the iPads there are bent. As I said before, I’m yet to see one that is bent outside this forum.

Actually if you use just Geekbench for reference only, iPad Pro 10.5” is still more powerful than any high end android device until now and close in performance with an 8, X or XR/S. So it can be “outdated” as now there’s the new models, but performance wise it is still a beast and will continue to be for at least 2 or 3 more years, And after that it probably will still be considered a “good enough device” like the gen1 pro are nowadays.

Have had an 11Pro for more than a month and a 10.5 for 1.5 years. Absolutely no discernable performance difference. IOS is so efficient that the 10.5 is massive overkill right now.

Also, my 10.5 has about .23GB more usable RAM than the 11Pro, 3.91GB vs 3.68GB. Both 64GB versions.

I'm looking to maybe replace my iPad Air 1st gen which is getting slower. My question would be, which of those 2 10.5 or 11 will last longer and not get slow in the future with iOS updates. I'm pretty impressed with my Air, It's almost 5 years old, and still pretty ok for most task.

OP, you're going to have to figure out what you're willing to make a concession on. Either it's the rare possibility of a bent iPad or not having the latest and greatest iPad. Do you need the "status" of having the latest and greatest? Are you willing to listen to all the people telling you the 2017 Pro is still a beast of a machine? No matter which one you pick, it will suffice for your extremely, extremely average use. You are not a power user and you won't even come close to maxing out the capabilities of the 9.7" iPad, let alone any version of the iPad Pro. Watching Netflix and taking notes isn't going to put a dent in the iPad's performance, so I'm not sure why this is still such a difficult decision for you.

The original Pencil is weighted on one side. I’ve never had mine roll off a desk or anywhere in more than 2 years. It also has a bigger battery and lasts longer. You can also put a silicon or rubber skin around it which you can’t with the new one. Honestly the only think I like better on version 2 is the easy charging. Even then, don’t forget to take it off or it will drain your ipad battery.

I'm a fan of Mr Shield matte protectors... I have them on my 12.9 iPad Pro, 9.7 2018 iPad (and iPad Air 2 before replacing it with the 2018), and Lenovo Yoga Book. Sadly they don't seem to make them anymore.

I recently purchased an iCarez matte protector (the only one that I could fine) for my Pixelbook. I would rank it a hair's breadth lower quality than Mr Shield but quite acceptable to me.

Although the friction is very, very slight with the matte protector, it is enough to offer better control. As for dulling the screen, there is a very slight reduction in brightness but because there is no glare from room lights, I don't need to increase the brightness to compensate for it.
