I just got an iPad Mini 2 as a gift and was thinking of swapping it for an iPad Air 2, though I could have sworn I'd read something about an iPad Air 3 being rolled out alongside a number of iPad Pro models this coming March. Now I can't find anything about the IA3, only the Pros. Has the Air line been consumed by the Pro line? I'm assuming that, whichever the case, it's probably prudent to wait until March to buy one.

Thanks!

There won't be an iPad Air 3.
The 9.7 inch iPad Pro is the "iPad Air 3"
The Air 2 is the last Air

Yes, want until march . A7 IPads are too underpowered.especially the Air 1 .upgrade in march or you will regret it.

I have a 1st gen iPad mini and decided to upgrade to the 9.7 iPad Pro now instead of waiting until the spring. I guess I'm a rebel by MacRumors standards.

So in terms of the topic of conversation are you saying "yes, the Air line is dead?"

Did the "iPad" line die when the Air was introduced?

They aren't separate product lines, just different names for marketing purposes. iPad --> --> --> iPad 4 --> iPad Air --> iPad Air 2 --> iPad Pro is all one continuous product line. One could call the 9.7" Pro the "Air 3" or even the "iPad 7".

Great, thanks.

I guess that was my poorly worded version of " hey is there an ipad air 3 on the horizon or is it all Pros from here on out?"

Ha...I just picked up an iPad Air 2 for super cheap a few weeks back to replace my aging iPad 3. I couldn't bring myself to get the Pro....my problem with the Pros are that they are significantly more expensive than the typical iPad models from the past and I just didn't want to spend $600 on a 9.7 tablet.

Don't they usually start at $399, $499???

The 9.7 Pro is like a Super Mega Ultra iPad Air 3 if you want to think about it like that. It does everything and more that the absurd 12.9 Pro can do and is the same size and weight as the iPad Air 2 pretty remarkable.

Nah, you're good. The 1st gen Mini is unusable imo because its specs are antiquated. A 500 single core score on Geekbench? Yawn.

I can watch Netflix on it... and that's it. It takes ages for anything else to load.

I was tempted by the Air 2 because of the price but figured that at the rate I upgrade my devices I should probably go for the Pro hah.

Forget the Pro if the Air 2 can do what you need because it's a nice device, especially with split screen multi-tasking.

I'm a little confused with Apple's lineup. Usually when a company has a pro model it means that it's one level above the "regular" model. However, for Apple it just seems like Pro equals the new model and "regular" means one year old model. It's been happening with the iPad and the MacBook Pro (the non touch bar 13inch MBP essentially replacing the MBA).

As to your question, I think that the iPad Air line is done, same with the iPad Mini line. At this point it just exists as a gateway to entice buyers who would normally go for cheaper Android alternatives.

My guess is, yes. Pro line will replace it and they will sell the Air 2 has the budget iPad then eventually get rid of it all together in a couple of years. I doubt we will see an Air 3.

Air is just a name. Like how the iPad used to be called iPad with Retina display and then simply "the new iPad" before being redesigned and called air. The air was redesigned again and named pro. I would've thought that was obvious

They didn't want to increase the prices on the Air to help revenue, so they will drop it for the more expensive Pro lineup.
