I would definitely say it is 6G, it has a whole new look physically, a new GUI, higher res video playback, and much larger capacities. The physical aspect of controlling it has been perfected, so they had no reason to change that.
 
I guess since it has reached a "classic" stage, it means it's been perfected so.. It deserves a 6? With all the swanky new additions like interface and thinness?
 
The only reason people called the last generation the 5.5 generation is because the ONLY difference between that gen and the one prior was hard drive size, battery life, and screen brightness. The form factor, software, and innards were otherwise almost identical.
 
What about the iPod Touch? I guess it is considered 1G. (But in not too many years, the classic will cease to exist when flash capacities equal what HD capacities are currently available.
