From 9 to 5 Mac:

Apple’s Journal app is only available on iPhone

With the release of the first iOS 17.2 beta on Thursday, Apple has made a preview of the Journal app available to developers. However, contrary to what some might have expected, Apple’s Journal app won’t be available on iPad and Mac at launch.

Users who have installed iPadOS 17.2 beta or macOS 14.2 beta have noticed that the Journal app can’t be found on the iPad or Mac, only on the iPhone with iOS 17.2. By digging into iOS 17.2 code, 9to5Mac can confirm that the Journal app is only compatible with the iPhone at this point, and it seems unlikely that it will be made available for other devices in the near future.

What's the point of locking it just to the iPhone, with the iPad literally being the ideal journaling tool with the pencil?
Yep…. Totally an idiotic move. Apple surely must realise everyone including journalists will have a field day in hitting Apple.

What's the point? To trigger FOMO. Absent any news of new iPads, people are talking about a single app and how iPad owners are "missing out" on that app.

They likely ran out of time for completing the design and development of iPad and Mac versions of the Journal app. iPhone is always the priority, and when you’re (unnecessarily) doing yearly releases, you have to prioritize.

No calculator? Use a thirdparty calculator app, there are multiple good ones
No journal? Use a thirdparty journaling app, there are multiple good ones

To me, an official app and an app from the app store make no difference :3

You are spot on in your assessment I think. Tons of people tend to spend all their money on hardware just to cheap out on the software part and run the cheapest stuff they can find.

Perhaps not true but a typo from MacRumors, see rapper’s post below. (Edit 4:35pm EST 10/27/23))
From todays update from Mac Rumors public beta release 17.2
iOS 17.2 adds the Journal app designed to let iPhone and iPad users record their daily activities and thoughts. Apple offers prompts that can be used as inspiration, and journal entires can be outfitted with images, voice recordings, location tags, and more. Can anyone verify, I’m not. Using the beta

I really hope it comes in a later 17 update or iPadOS 18. While I’m glad to have it on my iPhone for journaling on the go, it would be a thousand times nicer to journal with my pencil on the iPad. I’m hoping it doesn’t take them as long to port it over as it did for Weather, Health….Calculator…

Just like lock screens and widgets being on the iphone one year and then ipad the next, same crap here. It’ll be revealed as a feature in iOS 18 next June and maybe they’ll rizz us up with some ipad centric features like writing handwritten entries or something

for right now if i was gonna type something long, I’ll type in on ipad and (Universal Clipboard it) to iphone in the journal app.
