I think it’s frustration. The anticipation of the X was so high, and when it finally arrrived many were let down, became emotional, and went to the forums to express their frustration.

I think the X is a great phone, but I also think many others were expecting “more”. Couple that with Apples secrecy and unpredictability when releasing new products, and you get extreme views.

Considering how many people view a phone as an integral part of their life, I can see people going to extremes and making extreme comments.

I’ve heard rumors of companies trying to influence opinion on large forums before, but I never really believed them. But with an insane number of posts trying to convince people to return iPhones, not to buy the X, how Face ID somehow doesn’t work and finger scanning is better, etc. - I’m starting to wonder if this is somehow, hm, motivated by an outside factor.

I’m sure there are people who genuinely disagree with a lot of Apple’s decisions, but in all the years I don’t remember this forum ever having so many calls to leave the iPhone. Certain users are even starting multiple threads with the same theme. People who buy iPhones are insulted daily. “Cultists”, “Blind”, “Ignorants”, “Even if Apple asked for their fingers, they would still buy them”.... Also, words like “scandal” and “lies”.... I’ve never seen it this bad.

We are witnessing how social media can be abused to influence entire elections, why would this be any different? Am I being paranoid here?

Did it ever occur to you that people are just fed up of Apple's BS.

I am one of those individuals that have complained about face ID and iPhone X and generally. I strongly believe that touch ID does work better than the current face id generation. It's possible with the next X apple makes improvements, but as of right now it sucks.

And I did get rid of my iphone x because I just wasn't happy with it. But I can assure I don't work for a company. I'm just a pissed off customer.

You're so wrapped up in your Apple fanaticism you cannot see the faults of the iPhone x. It has a lot of issues that needs addressing. Instead you're conjuring up some mass conspiracy, because lord knows it can't be Apple at fault here.

And no one is calling iphone users cultists. It's the one who keeps denfending the BS who are cultists.

You can use a product but not blindingly accept everything the company puts out.

I like Apple products. Been using macbooks and iPads for the past 5 years and iphones for the last 3 years. I have been generally satisfied up until the iPhone x. With the issues it has its just not worth the money.

Then with the news of Apple slowing down devices without informing consumers is inexcusable.

These are REAL issues that need to be talked about and as Apple customers we have to speak out against them so Apple does better next.

If folks are expecting more they are going to be disappointed from here on out. Smartphone have hit a wall more or less at this point.

I was blown away by the X but I have also been using smartphones since the days of Series 60, Symbian and Palm OS.

Realistically there isn’t much more you can radically do to the body style and design of smartphones anymore. I mean the display and the camera are both radically better than their predecessors.

Until we get to foldable and I mean real foldable phones not just something that is just a secondary screen everything from here on out is going to be minor ticks and tocks.

Fun fact though when Apple did do something radical like remove the headphone jack people lost their mind over that ignoring the reasoning as to why this was done.

If people think that Apple or any company can defy the limits of technology and create things that are near impossible at this point they need to get their head checked.

To one of OP's original points, do you really need to insult people who bought the X? "Cultists, blindly accepting, buyers of something not worth the money." Yes, these are insults to people who enjoy the X. You are unlikely to be more objective or smarter or better at determining value of things or more independent minded than me.

Why are you so "pissed off" about the X? And you were satisfied with the 7 as a new model (widely accepted as a 3rd iteration of a years old basic design). That model delivered your expected goods, but the X pisses you off? Yes, Apple is full of BS, always has been. All companies whose goal is profit do not disclose most things to their customers. The point is about this newfound fanaticism of hating. I'm not clear what changed between what you think is the wonderful 7 and the awful X now? And while you're at it, how has Apple also transformed during this same period? What exactly is Apple at fault here that cultists are defending? I am just as confused with everyone's fanatical, hating rationale as the OP. Only of course if you are just a regular Apple guy you say you are. I'm also confused if I'm one of you guys or one of the cultists because I like the X, but pretty annoyed (not pissed) about other Apple products. I think I would only be pissed if a product failed to deliver what they said it would. Does Apple owe you money?

See, this is what I and so many others fail to understand. Based on your signature, you've moved on to the Galaxy Note 8. Why not just enjoy that instead of complain about a phone you don't even own anymore? I love the iPhone X. If I didn't, I would buy another phone and not spend another second worrying about the phone I didn't like.

Conspiracy cause apple cant do no wrong in some people's mind.......

Fun fact: People are not monoliths don’t all focus on the same thing. If someone wants to find fault in something you don’t have to go far to do so.

So just because someone does not perceive something you view as “wrong” means that person doesn’t share your point of view and last time I checked people don’t have to agree with everyone.

Once apple admitted to throttling, it just became next to impossible to defend them, final straw for most. Basically it gives their phones a whopping 18 month lifespan.

No, it doesn't. Throttling means something to 1% of the userbase and those are the users who upgrade their phones every 18 months anyway. Typical iPhone user makes a few phone calls, sends a few texts, takes a few photos every day. They aren't straining their processors.

Throttling is a good thing. It's what allows for good battery life in a battery that's dying out.

Oh, and if you think Apple is the only manufacturer doing this, think again. Just wait until they start testing Samsung's and other budget Android phones, it'll be the same scenario.

They aren't cultists because they enjoy apple products. They are cultists because they cannot accept any valid criticism of the device. You're deemed a hater if you do so.

The recent news of apple slowing down devices proves it. Some people on this forum defended it and shunned those who didn't accept Apple's excuse for not informing customers.

Enjoy your devices. But don't tell me it' raining when someone is pissing on me.

So because I own a note 8 I cannot enjoy iphones?

I change my phones quite often. I got rid of my iphone 7 plus in October and got a S8 and then in November I got an iPhone x. I enjoy both platforms. Both platforms have their pros and cons. I have no problems talking about the BS Samsung likes to pull on its customers.

I will take your non answers to my questions as wins. But silly pettiness aside, anyone who thinks their phone is perfect is delusional, even the glorious X. I'm just not sure you can say that defending certain negative points that are brought up as not accepting of ANY criticism, they are just the wrong criticisms.

Anyway, out of morbid curiosity, I will ask again, how is Apple "pissing on you"? Apple putting out a product that you didn't feel deserved your dollars is hardly pissing on you. What does the battery/slow down news prove? They withheld information on their solution to a no win situation. Bad, probably, but did people expect their phones to last forever? Slowing down compared to 40% to zero shutoff, both paths suck. Rechargeable batteries are a consumable product. An economical solution is to replace the battery, which they need to anyway. Why should the iPhone population as a whole be outraged by a bad situation that many never encounter due to upgrades? That's not defending Apple, it's saying they don't understand the outrage or more to the point, that's an unrealistic expectation for a battery powered, cutting edge technology. Maybe people are just wanting to pile on to being mad at a nameless corporation for some bizarre, unarticulated reason.

The issue isn't apple slowing down devices in order to save battery life. The issue is they didn't tell their customers who brought the device with their hard earned cash. Ok they need to replace the battery. Then have a message pop up telling them they need to replace battery or else it's going to slow down.

I get a new iPhone every year so it's not an issue for me. But a lot of apple customers don't get a new iPhone every year. So they are going to need a new battery. So why not tell them when they need to change the battery in order to keep their device at optimum speed?

The lack of transparency is the issue. Then they came up with some lame excuse that it's a feature. If it's a feature why didn't they mention it up until now? There's a reason why they hid. That is pissing on customers and telling them it's raining.

As for the my issues with the X, I feel it's over priced. I spent $1,181 on my iPhone x. I expected more. Face ID feels like it's in the beta stage. I could ignore the issues with the face ID if there was a secondary biometric option to unlock the phone. I spent a lot of my time using my passcode to unlock my phone. It was a pretty phone but it's not $1000+ worth.

That is my personal opinion about the X. Of course many people are happy with their X. But the OP's assertion that these "iPhone X haters" are paid, is absurd.

Yes, but call one of them out- with provable facts- and see what the moderators here do to you.

The moderators here are part of the problem- probably because the craposts drive more traffic.

(Now watch me get suspended or banned for saying the truth here)
The moderators have a very hard job.

I don't disagree with most of what you wrote. I think I noted that it was probably bad that they weren't transparent. I just don't think the level of outrage equals the crime. People who have 3 or 4 year old phones with degraded batteries should expect something bad to happen to their phone. But yeah, they should have disclosed it. People who aren't affected but were already mad at Apple seem to just want to claim this as another reason Apple sucks. A person doesn't need a reason to hate a giant corporation, but it would be cool if it wasn't spammed all over here.

I respect your opinion about the X. If it didn't work out, good thing there's a return policy. Also, I don't know if there are paid trolls here or not, but I for one can't understand why the X is such a personal affront to people. It's just a phone. Is there a need for the level of trolling there is about it? Like it, buy it. Hate it, don't. Incessant bitching about a phone that one does not own is a little over the top. That is all.

Perhaps, but they definitely tolerate the astroturfing. This place is filthy with it. And it’s east to spot.
what you call astroturfing is actually someone just disagreeing with you. As long as its civil, it should be a scrumptious debate.

What people probably get in trouble for is name-calling, bad manners, and vile disrespect.

I suspect the more realistic explanation is that a lot of people, especially the ones who have loved Apple the most, are waking up and getting irritated by Apple's decisions lately.

I don't care for extreme rhetoric, but I see tons of very well-founded and reasoned arguments and complaints against Apple's decisions.

I think the fact that Apple sometimes screws people over with software updates really gets people, because they can't simply throw the device away and go buy a new one -- they're stuck with it. It makes it so people take it more personally as they feel they're getting shafted by Apple's anti-consumer policies.

The fact that third-party testers had to discover that Apple was throttling iPhones based on battery health is bad enough -- to find out they're doing it to phones that Apple's own diagnostics report as having "Healthy" batteries that don't need to be replaced... People are right to jump on that.

People who have invested the most into the "ecosystem" are, IMO, the ones who will speak out the most since they can't just abandon ship and it's actually costing them money, time, and frustration.

What keeps you coming back to MR forums? Surely it's not just to look up how-tos and scroll for bug reports. There's no fun in that ;)

People just like sharing their thoughts.

Actually, I learn things here and there believe it or not. Initially I came on to talk about how much I loved my MBP and to share and gain knowledge about it. Trolls everywhere. I came back with the excitement about the X. Yep, trolls again. I have to sift through a ton of awful, bitching threads to get some insights and just have simple fan banter. This is an Apple fan site right? I don't consider all criticisms trolling, only the repetitive statements from the same people about why they didn't buy this product. That doesn't really help me, but I engage anyway. This might not be taken without offense, but people who like to share constant negative thoughts aren't really people you want to hang around with in the "real" world. They are even more annoying in this fake world. Crying and complaining isn't really the party I was looking for.

I've never seen Apple this bad, user hostile, cynical, greedy. It's probably related to that.

And as much as that is your opinion, I see your post as a lot of hyperbole and you're trying to project Apple as some evil corporation that is trying manipulate every consumer.

It's called choices, if you don't like what you see, no one can force anyone to purchase Apple products, you have options.

You're as articulate as ever, but I'll bite again. Is that a reason to be "pissed off" at Apple? Do you feel entitled to something?
Yes there is. Apple choose to make key changes to their development & marketing process with the iPhone X. They were hoping people were willing to pay a super premium for the iPhone X. The poor sales and our criticism is the way we notify Apple that we do not support the decisions they made. It's the process by which Apple will make better phones in the future.

I wish you luck in your goal to get Apple to listen to you and make a phone that suits your needs. Two questions: 1) What would have the ideal X looked like to you, as in what are the ideal specs and features of such a phone? and 2) Does this mean we can look forward to you popping in to all X discussions in the future to bash on it so that Apple will listen to you?
