Is the Mac Pro 250GB Hard drive 7200.9 or 7200.10?

The initial models had the 7200.9...I assume that's still true. I doubt they would switch to the higher-priced, new technology perpendicular recording drives at the same capacity.
7200.9 if you get a Seagate
WD2500JS if you get a Western Digital
Both are 7200 RPM 8mb cache drives

Yip, 7200.9 here (160GB Seagate), although immediately stripped out and replaced with Western Digital drives

But i just put the drive in the cd/dvd slot and cabled it from the mobo.
Now waiting for 4x500 maxline pros to arrive tomorrow.

Umm, in short.
There are 2 unused sata slots on the motherboard,you can see them under the top part of the fanstack. 2 slots,both unocupied.
I routed a elbow sata cable from the slots (wich i got onto place with longnose pliers,so i didnt have to remove the fanstack) towards the cd/dvd bay via the same route as the other cablings go.
Wich was a bit bitch too.
Then,after installing a 5 1/4" adapter to the HDD, i put the HDD with the connectors facing the faceplace in the cd/dvd slot.
The reason why i put it "wrong way" was because my sata cable was too short (50cm) to reach if i would have placed the drive right way.
There is a free power (molex 4 pin) connector in the bay and with a molex-->sata 25cm cable i connected the power.
Then i put the whole drivepack halfway to the slot,and attached the sata cable with pliers (as i said,it was a bit short..).
The drivepacks cables catches really easily when putting the chassis back,so it wont go easily in its place properly.
Then it is just to power up!
Took about 40 mins because the layout was a bit new for me. Now it would take about 15?
Neccessary things:
1. 50cm Sata cable (1 connector straight,1 90´)
1. 25cm molex-->Sata power cable.
1. 5 1/4" --> 3 1/2" drive adapter
Long nose pliers,drivers and a bit patience.
That's awesome! I think I might stick another drive in there, you can never get enough hard disk storage, and its certainly a lot tidier than adding external drives. Huge thanks for the info
Edit - I've also just noticed on barefeats that you can install and IDE drive directly using the IDE/Power cables in the Optical Bay. Still think I'll go for SATA though for speed, and power should be handy as Western Digital drives have a molex power connector, saving an extra cable

I wanted to ask those of you who bought new drives, what do you recommend? I'm planning to get a couple of 250GB for Raid 0 to use for video capture and editing. I would like to strike a nice balance between speed and loudness. I was thinking Seagate but I'm hearing good things about the WD drives. The newer perpendicular drives also sound interesting, but I'm a bit wary of paying premium for new drive technology. Especially running in Raid 0. Your thoughts are appreciated.

Well, the "research" i did, three drives came most often up.
WD 500GB RE2 (WD5000YS)
Maxline Pro 500GB (7H500F0)
Segate 750GB (T3750640AS)
Segate came up negatively,because MPs apparently cant handle them when in four disk raid 0 (dont know how they behave in raid 10?), getting a negative impact in writes and speeds.
So the WD and Maxtor was the contenders. Both are enterprise class HDDs (well,close) with exelent reads and writes. The WDs are more silent and a bit cheaper.Both drives are on the top of the crop in performance, loosing only to WD Raptors.
I ended up ordering WDs,but they had a lot of problems delivering them.
So i canceled the order and got the Maxline Pros.They should be in the computer within 2 days.
Then the intresting part starts

Interesting you chose the Maxtor. I don't have the link...maybe I read it on storage review dot come... but the Maxtor didn't fair well. The review I read favored the Seagate...if memory serves. Damn... now I'll have to go find the article.
Barefeats has a blurb about the 7200.10 write issue on at least the 320GB and 750GB models when used in a non-RAID configuration under the "Seagate Puzzles" heading near the bottom of the page. Seagate does have an updated firmware out to address the four Seagate 750GB striped hard drives performance issue (but not for the non-RAID slow write issue).Macinposh said:

Seagates have done well too,but with a bit more disparity between reads/writes.
For me the priorities was speed and size. If speed would be the only criteria,Raptors would have been my choice,but they are too bloody small.
