Is the Macbook Moo Normal? CHALLENGE!

Is there anyone who is able to get to mid 60 to high 60 celsius temps without the moo? I'm beginning to think that it's relatively normal considering how many people are experiencing the "problem." Just want to know if there's someone out there who can actually get to these high temperatures without that fan kicking in. If so, lucky you! But honestly, the moo isn't that bad, especially with the beautiful machine gazing back at you. Such nice, white, sensuous curves...

When mine goes up-to those temperatures it gets hot beneath but doesn't moo, occasionally the fans come on but that is totally normal for a laptop and they aren't loud anyway,

I'd also be interested in the results. I just bought my MacBook last week and I have had the moo and the whine as well as a 65 degree temp web browsing and my bluetooth has mysteriously gone missing....

it may be normal in the sense that lots of macbooks have it but I doubt it's the sound of a fan operating properly. Why rev up a fan then immediately rev it back down.

I'm taking it back to the store tomorrow and i need to decide whether i want to wait for another one to come in, trade it for an iMac or just stick it out.
 
moo definitely NOT normal...

so as i said before in a previous thread, i have been considering returning my macbook because of the moo. ive been afraid to actually go in because i dont want to have the genius tell me its perfectly normal and that i cant do anything about it.

people have actually called in and apple care says that it is defenitely a defect! i called in, but they just told me to take it to the store to have the genius there verify if it was indeed a problem or not.

i guess ill be going into the store soon! i still have about a week to return/exchange.

if anyone else has successfully exchanged/returned their macbook because of the moo, please post about it!! im sure wed all love to hear about your experience!

Chris, when you return your macbook, can you inform us all if the new one still moos? I want to hear from someone who actually had the moo, made a return, and their new one didn't moo. MOO MOO MOO! ANYONE ALREADY DONE THIS?!

I just called apple today to see if they could do anything about it. The guy had no clue or had no previous experience with it. All he had me do was unplug the power, remove the battery and press and hold the power button for 5 seconds. It didn't do squat.

I can even reproduce the moo consistently, I just run electric sheep screen saver, but he couldn't hear it over the phone. grrr. Basically the only alternative he had for me was to take it into a store.
 
I took mine into the local apple store. The genious bar guy had never heard of the moo or the whine. He took it in the back, came back about 10 minutes later, and told me they were getting me a new one... I didn't even have to argue. Sad part is they were out of 2.0ghz white macbooks, so I'm patiently waiting for the store to get them in stock again. I'll let you guys know as soon as I get it if it moos.

Sweet. Quick question though, if they bring you out a new one will they swap the hard drives for you? It would be nice not to have to set everything up again.

EDIT: Oh and what did you bring along, the entire box with everything or just the macbook?

so as one of the many people with mooing macbooks i tried my luck returning it today. when i got to the apple store i told the mac genius about he problem and he said he had never heard of the problem before... he proceeded to ask the other mac genius' as well and they too hadn't heard of the problem. the few that were returned with problems was due to dead pixels.

so he asked me to show him the mooing. it ended up taking me about 15 mins to get it to moo (right at 64C like always) and he did say he did hear it. so he went on to do several diagnostic tests and one specifically on the fans. as a result the tests were all fine... he did show me the results, too.

so after all this he did report the problem so if something does happen the do have a record. i asked him so what should i do about it? just ignore it? and he said yes, it doesnt seem to be causing any problems but if it does bring it back.

personally i don't mind the mooing as long as it doesn't cause any problems.

same, i normally operate at 60-70 range and no moo thus far. but the mooing i can see as annoying though since its the fan going on and off repeatedly, my PC fan runs continuously so it just become background noise but a mooing sound can be wierd.

I think they back up your harddrive. The guy had the macbook in the back for about twenty minutes after he came back to tell me they were going to replace it. My guess is he was backing it up during that time... can't be sure though.

When I went there I wasn't actually expecting them to give me a new one, so I didn't take anything beyond the laptop. He told me that when I brought it back to bring the box and stuff and they'd just give me a new sealed one along with all new accessories. My power adapter actually makes a lot of noise so I figured I'd try a new one.
 
I took mine back and they ordered a new motherboard...I'll get it back on tuesday or wednesday.
 
My MB

Im taking my MB on Thursday, it whines, and moo's

The London Apple store phone rep, said he had heard of the problem, but they have not had any handed in to them.

Thankfully im still in my 10 days,
 
The highest temp I've had is 43 celcius. I've had no moo, but the MB's in the Apple Store got up to 68 when I opened two 720p movies (playing simulaneously). No moo.:cool:
 
"all macbooks moo" says the genius...

so i called apple care a 2nd time after i was told to go into the store the first time about the moo/whine, and they still said i have to go into the store to prove anything was wrong. i only called again after reading some encouraging posts about how apple care said there was a defective batch that mooed and how the macbooks werent supposed to do that.

anyways, brought it into a store and the genius told me they all moo and that its definitely not defective. he said that the macbook was designed to turn on the fan that way, but if it turns out to be more of a hinderance, then theyll fix it. he also said said "im sure apple is working on a fix for it". so if your macbook just moos, then i dont think you can return it or anything. but my powerbrick and magsafe connection also hissed/whined. he took it into the back to hear it more clearly, came back and said "i hear a liiiittle bit of sound...." but still offered me a 10% restocking fee FREE return.

i wonder if hes just saying the moo is on all of the macbooks just to keep people quiet. i mean... would a teeny tiny sound that he supposedly heard (its actually really loud and annoying) really warrant a waiver of the 10% restocking fee?

Returning My Mac Book!!!

SO I have a whole herd of cows in my Mac Book. This thing mooed all day long since I got it.
Called TEch support and they had me take the battery off and hold the power key down for 5 or 10 seconds.(cant remember). Now the cows have migrated and it moos 10 to 15 times a day but the ear splitting sound that comes from when it is charging is horrendous. I found if I open PHoto booth it goes away but who wants a lame fix like that. I called the sales they transferred me to tech who transferred me to sales who transferred me to someone that processes returns. Luckily I am within the 14 days of purchasing it and they are taking it back. I had to give them a case # from Tech support but they sent me the prepaid labels and said nothing about a restocking fee. I went out and bought a 599.00 compaq. At least I know when I hear the fan I know why....it is a PC(Piece of Crap). I will wait until they get the problems fixed. I should have know when it was shipped direct from Shenzen(spelling) China. Has Apple sold out to the lowest bidder?
For now I will use my Copmcrapq.
Good luck hearding the cows away.
