Is the new Mini good for HD video?

My trusty G5 dual tower 1.8 is competent, but slow for HD video rendering. Would the new Mini be a significant upgrade for me? I have a great monitor and keyboard already.

I can't see much difference between the Mini and standard Imac, beside the slower internal drive. If I use an external firewire drive for capturing, would this no longer be an issue? Thanks!

The mini might be an upgrade for you, but at the same time the desktop machines do prove to be faster. You could always use your extra monitor with the iMac too.

The Mac Minis are surprisingly quick though. I have the version right before this one.

HD is no longer a problem for the Mac Mini as of 2009. If you wish to view HD video in a desktop situation, then the imac might be better because you have the dedicated screen right there. If you wish to view HD video on a large screen tv, then the mini is the way to go because it will be a cleaner installation, allowing you to store/hide the mini in an out of the way place.

If you just want to watch HD video, mac Mini is completely fine.

Video editing is what I'm doing, but it's just for fun. Actually, editing HD is not a problem; it's the time it takes to apply filters and render. HD is especially demanding and can tie up the computer for hours.

The Imac is a possible choice, but I prefer viewing my Sony 19" LCD at it's lower native resolution. I'll have to look at the new Imac screens to see if I like the improvement.
