Is the Sony 75-300mm f/4.5-5.6 zoom lens worth $100?

Hi guys!

I've been wanting to get into DSLR photography for quite a while (I actually posted here about a year ago), but with car troubles and financing college, I haven't been able to get myself a body.

In any case, I've always leaned at getting an Alpha because it fits best in my hands. In any case, I know this lens is super slow, and not recommended.

But, I guess Best Buy has them on clearance for 100 bucks. I probably won't be able to afford a body until this summer. However, is it worth taking the plunge on this lens now? Sure, it's far from the best lens out there, but would it be a good addition to a beginner's kit lens for the price?

I don't have this lens but I do have an Alpha (an Alpha 700 since yesterday, but I had 200 for quite a while before that.).

In general with Alpha lenses (Monolta, Sony or third party), check Dyxum for reviews.

This lens get generally 'meh' reviews. I've not used it, so can't give feedback, sorry. I'd probably check ebay first to see what lenses / prices would fit a similar niche. After all that though - $100 dollars for a fairly decent range isn't so bad for a starter lens - if it were back when I got my first Alpha, I'd have probably gone for it at that price.

Do make sure to look out for Minolta AF primes on ebay, sometimes you see them at good prices, and they are very nice lenses.

Save that $100 and put it towards a good lens. Don't get stuck with a lens that downgrades your camera.
