Has anyone put an Ultra through the surf and noticed any issues?

I am in the surf every morning and so far, am onto my 3rd Apple Watch 10 and not sure if I should get an ultra or a proper surfing watch. My thinking is the Ultra probably isn’t that much more water resistant than the 10. It’s only 100m water resistant, vs 50m.

Apple is sending my second replacement 10 now, and have said that if it breaks again they’ll look into it.

I’ve been assured I’m doing nothing wrong, but eventually I’m not sure Apple will keep replacing them.. maybe another year (Australian consumer law)

Thanks

It should be more than enough. I have not had an AW leak since the very first one, long ago. I swim with my AW all the time and not a single leak since.

ultra is rated twice the water resistance as you say (that’s a big difference) and also certified for recreational scuba diving

Waterproof watches come in different classifications:
- 30 m: Suitable for everyday use, resistant to rain and splashes
- 50 m: Suitable for swimming in shallow water
- 100 m: Ideal for swimming and snorkeling
- 200 m: Suitable for diving and demanding water sports

Strange isn't it? Just take into consideration that movement underwater creates extremely high “dynamic pressure” that endangers your watch in a way that “static pressure” (the values in the list above) does not.

None of them are waterproof, only water resistant. Apple's article here should shed some light:

What should I avoid while wearing my Apple Watch?

Water resistance isn't a permanent condition and can diminish over time. Apple Watch can't be rechecked or resealed for water resistance. The following can affect the water resistance of your Apple Watch and should be avoided:

  • Dropping Apple Watch or subjecting it to other impacts
  • Exposing Apple Watch to soap or soapy water (for example, while showering or bathing)
  • Exposing Apple Watch to perfume, solvents, detergent, acids or acidic foods, insect repellent, lotions, sunscreen, oil, or hair dye
  • Exposing Apple Watch models other than Apple Watch Ultra or later to high-velocity water (for example, while water skiing)

Thanks all.

I suppose apple have replaced it twice in 13 months because it’s described as being suitable for ocean water swimming where there are obviously waves and salt.

The ultra is twice the cost and I’m not sure I want a bigger watch, so I’m uncertain what I want.
Apple will probably replace the 10 again if it fails once more in the next year or two.

The service person said that if it happens a third time they’ll look into the issue.. I disclosed I’d been body surfing each day.

No watches are waterproof, they are just water resistant (and how water resistant they are).
That’s what concerns me about the Ultra. It might be better than the 10, but it’s still limited like every watch. Even a 300m “divers” watch from Longines has that disclaimer.

I’d be annoyed paying AU$1400 for a watch that only lasted 3 years.

I suppose the alternative is just to get a Casio which is what most surfers get,

Sounds like you are a great tester for AW since you put it through seawater every day, would have loved you to try the Ultra and see how it holds up.

But practically speaking yeah it’s probably a good idea just to get a cheap Casio.

Swam every day in the sea in the UK with my Ultra 2 for the last 2 years and absolutely zero issues - some days with very rough seas / surf and been in for hours...plus most days it gets a proper power shower soaking at my local gym too after my weights workout :)

I would think surely it would be just fine. I saw a feature a while back on someone who lost their Apple Watch Series -- not the Ultra -- in a lake in a disused gravel quarry somewhere in England during the autumn, and succeeded in retrieving it out of the water the following spring. Once he'd extracted the battery and replaced it, the watch was fully functional other than rather unsightly burn-in all the way around the perimeter of the LED watch face. And the Ultra of course has far better water resistance.

I’m impressed, swimming in water that cold takes Were you swimming or surfing

Thanks for the comments. I figured an ultra would last a good 4 years if I’m lucky so bought one and I’ll trade my Apple Watch 10 in when it’s replaced
