I have $500 in credit to trade towards the phone (apple gift cards, iphone 7 plus, and $100 of down payment), but I don't even know if I should just go for the Xs or Xr.

My 7 plus works fine now, but the value will depreciate for trade-in, so I want to move and get a new phone now.

I wouldn't base whether you upgrade or not on the trade in value. Upgrade less often, spend less money. Upgrade if the new features are worth the cost to you. Nothing wrong with holding onto a phone for 3+ years if it works for you.

That said, I do not think the XS Max is worth it at all for $1100+. I'm probably going from the 6S+ to the XR for the camera and battery life.

But I'm not really spending if I'm trading in a phone, considering that phone has no value to me. Wouldn't it be more costly to wait and pay close to full price in actual cash?

Gift cards don’t expire. The only thing that will depreciate if you wait is the trade-in value of your current phone. If the unique features/qualities of the XS Max appeal to you vs the features/qualities of the Xr, then I’d go for that. Or if neither of them offer any value to you whatsoever, I’d just wait.

I’m upgrading my 6s Plus to a Xr because it’s been three years, and the XS Max doesn’t have any unique features that warrant the extra cost IMO.

If you're doing a trade in, maybe. I always sell mine myself, and like cars, phones depreciate fastest in the first couple years. They will never have 0 value on the open market.

I know gift cards, I'm talking strictly about the value of my phone. I'm comparing the specs and I know there's nothing unique about the Xs, but something is drawing me to it. I have $415 in apple store credit with my gift card, phone trade in, and immediate downpayment, so I could potentially just get the Xr then wait until next year, I suppose.

Nobody can answer this question but you. How badly do you want the screen real estate, and how badly would $1,100 hurt you? Those are the two criteria. If you could handle 5.8 or 6.1 inches and can't really afford to pony up for a Max, it's not a smart move to get one.

The Xs Max is the heaviest and thickest iPhone ever made. The Xr's screen has a lower resolution than your Plus. The Xr will not give you Plus phone screen quality.
I'd wait until the guinea pigs give their feedback & reviews on these two phones before dropping all that cash.

My advice - don't do it if you're already questioning this purchase.

Storytime: A friend of mine, always traded in his cars every 1-2 years, afraid it would depreciate too much to the point he couldn't get a new car. Today, the guy is broke and his mommy and daddy are having to pay for his rent. And this guy is in his 50's. How pathetically sad is that?

And you want a brick in your pocket, you will notice the size and weight. Trust me.

The iPhone Xs Max is the same size as the 8+ but with a bigger screen, but it's somehow thicker?

Lol I think this is a little different. I'm ELIGIBLE for an upgrade. If I wait until next year, I'd be paying more because my phone value is diminished.

Read my Storytime again. It's the same principles and logic of thinking; the only thing different is the value of product relative to your earnings. Nevertheless, if you upgrade now, don't you think you may want to upgrade again next year to that beautiful shiny iPhone 11 as you salivate and calculate to justify your XS trade-in value?:p:D

No, for the same reason I didn't upgrade to the iPhone X last year, which is that I wasn't eligible and the value was depreciating. I don't owe a single dime on my iPhone 7+, so if I wait for the iPhone 11, I'd be paying more than I would now. I understand the comparison you're trying to make, but I'm spending more money by waiting.

We'll find out soon enough

I think the point is you might pay slightly more, but far less often.
That's true, but I don't think that would mean I'm paying more unless I continued to do this for several years. If I keep my 7+ and replace my battery, that's $130 lost in value and $30 lost for a replacement when that $160 could've come off the price of my Xs Max. What do you think about?

If you think you’ll use your new phone for years, I’d go for it. It sounds like the timing is right for you. The real question: what is giving you pause?

If the iPhone 11 is really nice, I'll want it. However, I can also just wait for the 11s since I'll be eligible for an upgrade then.

Yeah, I was set on getting the Xr until I realized my wife will be getting a new phone next year, and I’d certainly feel jealous, so I decided to do the series 4 watch this year and wait for next year’s phone. It’ll probably have some nice features compared to this year. To be honest, this year’s phones didn’t offer any real surprises. Considering how iOS 12 is mostly a stability fix and iOS 13 is rumored to be more of an overhaul, I imagine next year’s phones will have more bells and whistles to utilize that new software.

Hmm...I'm leaning more towards waiting.
