Is their a way to test to see if an ethernet port works or not?

I just recently moved and got Rogers and the computer isn't recognizing my ethernet cable. I've used wireless since I got this Mac so I'm not sure if it's my computer or the modem that's the problem. If I'm able to figure out what the problem is, I can swap modems and hopefully have my internet up and running.

I don't really think it is my computer since it won't connect to my Xbox, but there is a slim chance.

On your modem, when the computer is connected and running, is there a LED light on the modem showing an active connection to the port?

If you have another PC with ethernet, you can use a crossover cable to test the interface by creating a direct connect network. Or you could try using an USB --> ethernet dongle as a test.

try connecting mac to the xbox. the original xbox (not 360) has some leds on the ethernet port which tell you if the link is up and if there's actvity.

my knowledge is a little old tho and the xbox was chipped so ymmv

Nope, the LED light isn't on, but that doesn't really let me know if it's the modem or my computer. I don't have any other PC around to test that.

It's the 360 and I don't think it had LEDs on the port.
