Is there a "best practices" way to configure apple mail 6 with gmail (IMAP)?

Any suggestions for configuring apple mail 6 with Gmail, on my Mac using Mountain Lion?

All I did was put in my email address, my password and let it figure it out on its own. Now, this is with a Google-hosted personal domain, but it worked.
