Force Quit (Cmd-Option-Esc) may work when the cursor is frozen, but not always.

I usually have to do a hard restart (holding down the power button) when I have problems that force quit can't fix.

Depends on what you mean...

Ctrl-Alt-Del does two different things on PCs (well, three, if you count its role in logging in)... if you press it once, it tries to do something analagous to the force quit, and allow you to quit an app. So yes, this function is pretty much the same, and you can use Opt-Apple-Esc.

The second thing it does is force a warm boot if the system cannot recover to the manager that lets you quit apps. The way to do this on Macs is to hold the pwoer button down....

Once you get to the point where the mouse is non-responsive, on either PCs or Macs, you're going to be warm booting. So that's pretty much what you're left with.

But are you asking if you can warm boot from the keyboard, because your keyboard is far away from the power button, or will the power button work for you?

You can also right-click (ctrl-click) the application that's hanging and Force Quit from there.

You can also Force Quit applications from the Activity Monitor and, of course, the Terminal...

When the system freezes, how long have you waited? This sounds like it is an issue involving Java loading up... although the mouse should not become unresponsive (i.e. not move the cursor), although it might change to a beachball even due to this. But there aren't many things a website should be able to do that would cause a Mac to completely lock up......

Have you only tried this in Safari? Perhaps get Firefox or Camino and give them a try?

Why yes, and it is a cool little App by Ambrosia Soft.
Escape Pod not to be confused with MetaMage's program of the same name (used for iPods).
Escape Pod allows one to terminate the formost application with [Control]+[Alt]+[Del].
Good for games or poorly writen media players that don't let you get back to the GUI easly.
