My work throttles large downloads to really slow speeds. Is there a link to a file that I can download at home so that I can put onto my portable hard drive to then be able to upgrade my iMac at work?

It's there in your applications folder after you download it. So you need to download it once then you can throw it on a flash drive.

Download it from the App Store.

Use dosdude Catalina patcher
You can download Catalina installer.app
Then you can save on external hdisk and use on your macs
You don’t have to patch , you have only to use the tools to download Os.

Note: You can use Disk Utility to determine the file system of a volume.

If the file system of the external volume is APFS or HFS+ (Mac OS Extended):

  1. Download macOS Catalina.
  2. Copy /Applications/Install macOS Catalina.app to the external volume.

If the file system of the external volume is not APFS or HFS+ (Mac OS Extended):

  1. Download macOS Catalina.
  2. Open Terminal.
  3. Enter the following command:

hdiutil create -srcfolder '/Applications/Install macOS Catalina.app' -format UDRO -layout NONE -fs HFS+ -volname 'Install macOS Catalina' "${HOME}/Desktop/Install macOS Catalina"
  4. Copy the file ~/Desktop/Install macOS Catalina.dmg (where the tilde represents the path to your home folder) to the external volume.

Didn't realize it was there. I just put it on my portable hard drive. So now all I need to do is place this installer in my iMac application folder at work and run it from there?

You could just run it from your portable drive. The installer doesn't need to be in the Applications folder to work.

Thanks all! It worked flawlessly. Just downloaded from the App Store at home and placed the file on my portable drive. Then placed the file in my applications folder just to be safe.
