Hi there,

like virgin Mary I came to a MacPro 3.1 with 16 gigs of RAM. Is there a way to install Big Sur on it? Even in the unofficial lists, there is no MP3.1 mentioned.

The standard way, I put BS on Mac mini 2012 does not work, it just reboots while starting from USB stick.

thx for any link.

what graphics card do you have in it? It needs to be Metal compatible. My 3,1 has a HD 5780 which is not supported by Metal.

oh damn, forgot that. Yes, of course, it the GT120 that kills it.

I thought HD5770 etc is supported? Do you know a decent card, that will work and does not cost a fortune?

No idea on possible cards. I don’t try to keep up on the GPU scene - too complicated. My graphics needs are well met by stock chips.

So I got a GTX 680 and patched the ROM. Runs fine in Catalina.
Tried to use bigmac patcher by starplayrX and created a patched Big Sur USB HDD as suggested. It shows up on boot menu, it starts loading (grey apple on white bg, no progress bar), it even shows those verbose-y logging lines as it does since patched Mojave or High Sierra, but then it just reboots. A crash out of nowhere. It keeps rebooting from now on at the same moment. Looping.
No matter what I tried, I am just to stupid to install Big Sur on my MP3.1.

does anyone please has any idea?

can you help me?

thx

Maybe stating the obvious, but I had the same! I did a NVRAM reset and out of the blue Big Sur started correctly!
