is there a horizontal mode (wider 'keyboard') for texting?

Just wondering why, when the phone is so smart, I can't turn it sideways when texting, and thereby get a much wider 'keyboard' (easier to hit the right keys!)
Is there a way to make this happen?

You can always text via IM
