CarPlay Is there a limitation on the models of mobile devices for Apple carplay?

Because my car factory radio is old and doesn't have many feature, so I just got one XTRONS TBE series aftermarket Android radio with built-in Apple carplay and Android auto installed on my ford 2008.

The sound is great and it works very well with my iPhone 11 but it can't recognize my old iPhone 4S. It is not a big deal, but I really find out why it doesn't work. Is there a limitation on the models of mobile devices? Any way to troubleshoot the problem?

Bro, iPhone 4S can't work with Apple carplay, needs to be iPhone 5 at least. i got a XTRONS double din unit from Amazon at £170，i guess it is the most basic XTRONS unit with Apple CarPlay compatibility, while the list of features is truly impressive, DAB+, dash cam, navigation, and other entertainment features such as Spotify, Bluetooth streaming, the apple carplay works with my iPhone Xs, but i needed a dongle from XTRONS as well.

Probably has something to do with the 30 pin connector vs Lightning.
