Is there a maximum file size for AppleTV?

For giggles I created a movie at 100% for constant quality while leaving all other ATV presets on Handbrake. This created a 5.1 gb file. Format was M4V and large file size was selected.

Movie added to iTunes but does not play through ATV. Plays through Quicktime and through iTunes.

So is there a maximum file size for AppleTV?

You somehow broke compatibility with the ATV. I have several 720p m4v videos over 5 gb and they play fine, with only the occasional stuttering over wireless n. Syn'd they play perfectly.

I have the Lord of the Rings Trilogy that are 7gb to 9gb each! They all play fine!

I just tried ripping Avatar in Handbrake at 100% quality and it churned out a near 40GB file. Didn't play in iTunes, Quicktime or Finder.
At 80%, a 13GB file wouldn't play, and then when I set a target size, a file of 9.4GB won't play.

So is there a limit where files just won't play anymore? The largest I have at the moment that plays correctly is 3.06GB, about 60% (standard) on Handbrake.

Not realisticially as long as they are 64 bit mp4's ("Large File Size" checkbox on the hb gui). Otherwise a 32 bit mp4 cannot exceed 4 GB.

generally the upper limit for visual transparency is about 62% for dvd sources and lower for hd sources. There is much about this here and in the hb forums.

Dynaflash will certainly correct me if I'm wrong but the TV limit likely being pushed here is video bitrate, rather than file size. Generally, video files exceeding 5500-6000 kbps will not play back smoothly and greater than that will not play at all. My encoded copy (720p) of Avatar checks in at 5.5 GB while Saving Private Ryan is 6.75 GB but both play fine on my TV as they both have bitrates less than 5500 kbps.

You are not wrong, though of course bitrate and file size are directly related everything else being equal

Since your movies do not play on your computer either, my guess is a 32 bit mp4 that was busted as soon as hb tried to go past 4GB, of course without a pastebin link to an activity log from hb ... I am just guessing. Note that of your four files the only one that plays is below 4 GB.

There is a reason the atv preset in hb uses a 64 bit mp4.

Ah thanks for that. That would explain why Handbrake is, by default, set at about 60% quality.
