Is there a specific app or feature, that either works better on iPhone, or only exists on iPhone, which is enough to keep you "iPhone bound"?

I have been pondering moving over to Android for some time now, but there are specific apps and features that either are only available on iPhone, or work better on iPhone compared to other phones.

To mention just a few, flighty app, craft app and Apple Pay.

If there was a flight app and craft app for Android, my "switching to" decision would be made easier, but these two natively working so great on the platform, it's hard to let them go.

Am I alone with feeling this way? Is there a specific app or feature that is keeping others "iPhone bound"?

You aren't alone. A lot of people feel 'trapped' in the Apple ecosystem. Fortunately, I'm not one of those.

There is no single app holding me back. But I do not use my phone like a computer, game console, or a TV. I have all those things and I use those instead. And as far as Apple Pay - well Android has Google Pay, which I have used and which works just fine.

The majority of my services are handled on my iPhone by third parties. I choose to stay on iPhone because I like iOS. But, because of those third party services, I could switch back and forth at any time. I do prefer Google's apps on the iPhone though, so there's that. But that wouldn't stop me if I wanted to switch again (I have done so in the past).

I have no particular desire to leave Apple devices per se... but the "Killer apps" for me are:
  • Apple Pay (on Apple Watch)
  • Messages synced across iPhone, Watch, iPad, Mac
  • iCloud syncing (photos, drive, contacts, calendar, keychain, etc) among all devices
  • iPhone/iPad apps on my Macs (mostly fitness/health tracking; I can enter meals etc on my Mac when I want to)
There are others too, that I don't use a ton but work really well... I like adding locations to Guides in the Maps app on my Mac, and having access to those when I travel... FaceTime is seamless with family... Home app handles some automations & video... calls ringing in on my iPad or Mac when I'm using those, don't have to find my phone... lots of little stuff. Heck, even communicating with family we put my son's wife in text threads so it's all iMessage and she just tells him what's going on (he's the only Android in the family).

As far as specific apps that are available on iPhone but not Android - no idea; I have no clue what Android has or doesn't have. iPhone works fine for me.

I am partially sighted and I prefer the way the screen magnification works on iOS (three finger double tap) to how it does on android. Also the fact that you can change the font size individually been the system and an app is helpful (although frustrating that not all apps obey dynamic font). My wife is also on iOS and we use find my and share iCloud albums and it wouldn’t go down well if I asked her to use different alternatives to that!

I prefer macOS over Windows.
I like how iPhone and Apple Watch integrate with macOS.
That is enough for me to stay with iPhone, the overall integration, call it ecosystem if you want.
I'm pretty sure very app I use would also be available on Android, but why would I give up iPhone and AW for that?

iMessage and Find My. Unfortunately, my family makes heavy use of these, so I have to play along.

For features I actually like; I think Mail.app is great.
I think iMessage and FindMy comes down to preference and usage.

Everyone is different, but my family does not discuss anything of major importance or privacy through iMessage. It's either face to face or through a phone call. SMS/MMS/RCS, on Android would be fine - we've done it. We also don't store images in there. Anything important is saved out. So nothing in my Messages app is anything I couldn't afford to lose.

And Google has it's own version of FindMy.

So for us, this would not prevent us from moving. It hasn't in the past.

The problem is that Google's isn't interoperable with Apple's. We're all adults, and I'm not willing to put in the effort to get five other people to change their phones and accessories to appease me.

Life is full of compromise. Wish Apple and Google would have to do it as much as us plebians do. Cest la vie.

Safari syncing is probably #1 for me, iCloud tabs in particular. Web browsing is so seamless across devices. And, as @jz0309 said, I so prefer MacOS to Windows, that the complete Apple ecosystem is my choice.

I get it. I'm not arguing that you're wrong or that you should do things the way I do, or anything like that. I'm simply just stating that it all comes down to preference and usage.

We were on Pixels for 9 months, but I still own Macs and iPads and older iPhones. Where it was necessary I just used my iPad for FindMy when I needed to detect an Apple device.

I do agree though about not making others change. When I first got an iPhone I did not have a line for it as I wasn't using it as a primary phone then. I couldn't text my mother from that phone at that time. So rather than trying to get her to move to an iPhone, setup an Apple ID and then be able to iMessage her, I simply went out and got a Google Voice number and was able to text her from there. So, I changed in that instance.

For me, it’s continuity.

I’m staying with Apple solely because of iOS. I use a Samsung for work, and I just can’t stand Android, it feels far less polished than iOS.
That's pretty much the reason I came back to iPhone in 2021. The lack of polish is especially evident (to me) in app icons. There is no consistency. Google never seems to have demanded it from the beginning and doesn't seem to enforce it much now. Kind of throws symmetry out the window.

Another issue I have a problem with is that even with only 9 months on the platform, Google kept changing shortcuts between major releases. Why bother to learn a particular action if Google is only going to change it in the next release? So Google's inconsistency continues here. How do you not frustrate users when being inconsistent?

The apple watch, and for the most frivolous reason too! I like the snoopy and mickey mouse watch faces lol. The sleep tracking, ecg, and other health features are fantastic too. AFAIK I could get a pixel or samsung watch that does those, or a garmin watch that does them, but I like the way Apple does that stuff better.

The iPhones are kind of underwhelming lol.

I still happily buy Macs because, while I preferred how MacOS used to be in the old days of snow leopard and such, it's still a great OS and lets me run commercial photo/video/music editing software without dealing with MS' ********. At the end of the day I'm more of a linux dude, but I like using MacOS... I can't stand using Windows.

TBH if it wasn't for the Apple Watch, I would have bought a Galaxy Fold 7 or waited for the tri-fold Samsung to come out.

Feeling trapped in anything is mentally unhealthy and toxic in your life. I would say switch to Android and see how it goes. The best way to see if the grass is greener on the other side is go and walk. Feel for yourself, and come back if you don’t like.
No I don’t feel trapped with any of my devices including those from Apple. They are tools and fit my needs for most part.

there kinda used to be but i've found replacements.

I use upnote which I find better than apple notes

simple mind pro for freeform (both are equally painful to use)

google suite instead of pages, numbers etc

photos can be transferred to google photos

ticktick for reminders

I think that's pretty much it

I would never use icloud sync, always google (calendar, contacts, etc) to keep openness

Advanced Data Protection. If that goes away in the US, I'll strongly consider moving to Android + Proton Apps (which I already use for certain things anyway.) iMessage would've kept me, but RCS got rid of that barrier.

I actually really, really like where Android has gone. The keyboard WORKS. Gemini WORKS. The design is fun but not in the way. I have a Pixel for work and it honestly makes me sad just how much easier it is to get **** done on it.

i agreed and talk about the apps on IOS the apps are much more real and more destop like but on android it feels like the apps are no where near has good or has polished pluse no where near like desktop level apps that you have on IOS

Is there a specific app or feature that is keeping others "iPhone bound"?

Yes. Actually, there are.

1. There is no equivalence to Airdrop anywhere in the entire world. The closest anyone can get is some form of pseudo FTP server between the phone and its target (another phone, a computer, etc...). But never something as seamless and integrated as Airdrop. In fact, the closest alternative to Airdrop is Dukto, which has ceased development for years but is still usable today.

2. Accessories: search for iPhone accessories, you get probably millions of results on and offline. Walk into any random phone accessory shop and you'll see accessories for most recent iPhone models. Android? I would be LUCKY if I can even find a case for my Z Fold 7 that's not... plain black or some variance of that. Seriously, try Amazon right now and see for yourself. I get far more options for accessories that I can strap to the back of my iPhone... than I do on the Android side.

3. Which brings me to this point: MagSafe. Wireless charging is of course not the whole point. Android has wireless charging, too. But the point of MagSafe goes beyond wireless charging. It can be used to magnetically attach the phone to a stand, attach it to a car mount, attach a wallet to the phone, attach a battery to the phone (and keep it there), etc... And sadly, there's no alternative for this in Android world that's "standard". You can indeed just purchase a magnetic case, but see #2 above: can we even get anything other than plain boring black?

4. It's minor but here's a few more things and I will just group them all under this headline:

If I want to annotate or sign a PDF with my phone or iPad? No problem. Save the PDF to Files, then just edit it, doodle or whichever. When done: save and email. It's super easy. What app on Android can even edit and save doodles to a PDF? Note: I have tried Adobe Acrobat as well. It's not that seamless.

If I want to select texts in an image on my iPhone? No problem. Just select naturally, then copy. Done. Works with most of the languages I have tried including Japanese and Chinese. What app on Android does this? Note: I gave up trying to look for one but maybe someone knows something very obscure that works.

While watching a video in Safari, if there's something too small in the scene that I cannot see, I can simply just... double pinch to zoom in to the video, or double tap! Note: as far as I can tell, ONLY the Samsung Internet Browser on Android allows something similar (but not quite). Nothing else does anything similar. Chrome on Android is now a joke.

As mentioned above, Safari syncing. But to me, it's more than that: all of my passwords, contacts, iCloud documents, etc... are visible across all devices I own at all times. If there's something that's not synced, I can just Airdrop it. I don't need to remember passwords to all of my apps anymore. The apps work with password syncing too. Is there anything similar for Android? There is but it's not integrated into the phone. You have to use a separate password manager that... ironically, you need a key or password to access. Yes, I know about Samsung Pass but that one just doesn't work the same way.

This is on a per-OS basis, but accessibility settings in my iPhone allows me to set custom font size per app. Is there anything similar for Android? I could not find one that's not a custom OS or that does not need ROOT. And ROOTing an Android phone is a whole other ballpark in terms of security concerns.

There's a bit more but those are the ones off the top of my head. This is me speaking as someone who uses both an iPhone and an Android phone daily. Android has its own benefits (more of an isolated standalone computer) but it also has its own massive drawbacks in the overall "ecosystem" that I find... cumbersome to work around. Others can disagree, but again, the above are the dealbreakers for me on Android.

I can mention a few things why despite advances and available customization in android, some users still lean toward iOS.

  • iPhone is still the best for video recording although a handful android flagship phones can challenge the iPhone in this category.
  • App updates come to iOS first.
  • For apps that are available to both iOS and android, the iOS version are way better than the android version.
  • iMessage (although other users use cross-platform messaging apps/services instead)
  • AirDrop
  • Apple ecosystem [Handoff, Continuity, etc.]
  • iCloud
  • iCloud Lock and encryption
  • android phones even the flagship ones lose their value quicker than iPhone
  • iPhone has a higher resale value
