A few times a week I usually use public transportation instead. But of course the iPhone can’t differentiate I’m on the bus or driving my car, it still says that I won’t get notifications if I’m driving. I do play on my phone when I’m taking the bus/train.

I set it up so it should only activate when it’s connected to my car’s Bluetooth, but then it doesn’t activate at all. It’s almost as if it doesn’t know my car’s Bluetooth belongs to a car.

I love the feature because of the auto responder for potential clients who choose to text.

I have the "When connected to car Bluetooth" option set in my phone and have never had it lock while using public transit. It does successfully lock when I'm in my car. Do you have an aftermarket stereo?

I have mine set to manual activation. I almost never drive and when I'm in a vehicle I'm usually a passenger. I also wear an Apple Watch, so it's easy for me to enable/disable DnD.

Here in Washington State it is no longer legal to use a mobile data device while driving. You can have it mounted to the dashboard for directions, and you can use it hands-free for phone calls and such. You can't even use them at red lights, so technically an officer can ticket you for having a smartphone in a visible location that is not mounted for hands-free viewing. Fortunately the Apple Watch got me into the habit of keeping my iPhone in my bag or in my jacket pocket while driving, so if I forget to turn on DnD and get a call/text I will just ignore it until I'm off the road. Okay, I might peek at my Apple Watch. If it's something I need to respond to I can ask Siri to send the text or make the call, but my trips are usually so short that whatever it is can wait.

Isn't there an option that says something like "I'm not driving" that could be selected when DND comes on automatically to get it to turn off a at that time?

This works for me maybe 95% of the time

It turns off for like 3 minutes and then comes back on after putting the phone away.

You can have the iPhone detect if it connected to CarPlay to enable it. Otherwise, manual only son.
