I recently bought my little sister (9F) an iPad Air and I want to track the location in case she loses it. She lost her iPhone 13 a few months ago which my mom bought and understandably she's still pissed about it. I setup Family sharing and screentime on it but I can't find a way. Prevent changes to location services under "Content & Privacy Restrictions" but that doesn't work.

Edit: I figured it out. In content and privacy restrictions, I turned off Share My Location. With it disabled, I can't removed from the Find My app.

Would be a simple rule in my house: you leave it on or daddy takes the T-bird away.
I'm still trying to process that 9 year olds get thousand dollar phones to just lose.
We don't know their level of affluence or motivation so I'm not judging them; but yeah, as soon as that feature is turned off the child gets a year with a cheap dumb phone. Let them learn texting on a T9 numbered. LOL

Exactly. Irrespective of your wealth, when expensive gear comes to your kids just a little too easy, you can't expect them to have any respect for it.

iPhone 13 for a 9 year old. This is where you’re going wrong.
Where my mom went wrong, no contingencies whatsoever; I had no say in her choice to get her an iPhone, she just lost the phone one day which I found a little surprising given that she kept her old iPad 2 for 2 years (my old sister bought that, it was a stupid buy in 2020). I guess phones are much easier to lose.

My mom bought insurance for my Galaxy S8 back in high school but didn't for the iPhone 13. Also, within the past 2 days or so, she traded in my Grandma's iPhone 7 Plus for a 13 Pro Max. I showed both my mom and grandma that the phone didn't have any issues and the problem was that they were using a broken charging cable, they refused to listen and yelled at me to go away (after they asked for my help ffs).

To say the least, she's not very rational. I gave up trying to reason with my family ages ago.

My family is not rich, my mom makes ~52K a year while my dad makes next to nothing. My parents are just really bad with money and lot of other things.

For some rich people, iPhone is nothing
Agreed but they'll just go out and buy another in the same way I buy a loaf of bread and not start a thread about it.

Sorry to hear that. Sounds like this is maybe a wakeup call. Or maybe not if they're that entrenched in their ways.

Well I have good news, my sister found her iPhone 13 yesterday! It fell through a gap in the living room couch. I setup family sharing on her device so I can track the device with Find My. I asked my mom if she wants to get insurance but she doesn't want to / is reluctant. She complained about not having enough money like she always does (yet somehow bought my sister an $800 phone, upgrading from the 2016 iPhone SE).

I called Apple Support and they I could take the phone to the Apple Store to have it inspected and for the slight chance the manager would offer AppleCare+. When I get time, I'll do that, with or without permission. Honestly I think my mom would be stupid if she's doesn't get any sort of theft & loss plan (if possible) after losing the phone for 2 months, she's not bright in general though.

Phone lost is actually covered by home insurance, you can check it first.
