hey, yeah, i just set up an eBay iMac for my father-in-law, and was wondering the same thing.

Anyone done this?

Yeah. If selling a machine on eBay it's probably better to reformat and reinstall the OS as well as give the new buyer the discs so they can do the same if they choose. Apple has a support article for this. It's not the smoothest or simplest process.

yeah, i totally agree in most cases. This one had some software on it that might prove useful... but not the discs.

There must be a way to change the shortname somehow. Any tweakers out there have ideas?

In most cases, it would be illegal for the new user to have that software installed. Assuming you're keeping the apps, check the software licensing to make sure it's okay. :)
