Hey i was wondering, i have my G4 Powerbook hooked up to an external monitor and i was wondering if there was a way that if i shut the lid on my powerbook could it still be running and just have the external displaying a movie? Everytime i do it my powerbook goes to sleep. I hope i worded that clear enough haha sorry its early i and i had a long night of studying last night . Thanks for any help

Is there a way to Close the lid and still run..?

I don't inderstand. The "normal" way to operate a PowerBook with an external display (or at least how I do it) is with the lid closed and only the external display active. When you close the lid it goes to sleep, but moving the mouse or tapping a key will wake it up and only the external display will be active. From that point on it will act exactly like a desktop system. If you are asking if you can leave the lid closed but disable sleep mode, the above link will do it but I would not recommend it for heat reasons. I don't want to take any chances with my precious pb!

When I wrote this there was only the one link about disabling sleep mode with the lid shut, and there is a very large disclaimer on the site about heat issues. Nowmally the pb will go to sleep after a while of no activity whether the lid is open or closed. When closed, this is important to keep heat from building up too much.max_altitude said:

To the original poster: Yes you can. Put the Powerbook to sleep, close the lid, plug in the external display, and finally wake the Powerbook (plugging something into a USB port usually wakes it up). If you are worried about heat then just open the lid after the system has started. The PB's screen won't turn back on until you unplug the external monitor.

Yeah. The iBooks cool through the keyboard as well, so having them on while the lid being closed would be very, very bad. That is a nice feature on a notebook targeted towards the light computer user however, because it causes the machine to run cooler and quieter.
My PB on the other hand, always has sound coming from the fan, and warms up quite fast - especially during GB, etc.
