One of the most stupid things that ever happened in tech design. No true way to hide it. Might become holes instead in iPhone 14? Looking forward to getting a practical full width status bar back as it can display much more information.

Will eventually disappear because Apple also knows it's ugly and in the way, but they won't admit this until they are able to get rid of it. By then the people here who keep defending the notch will praise Apple for getting rid of it.

Why are you asking this now? Are you a new notch user or just finally had enough?

No I am still on my 8 Plus because I can't stand the notch. Apple could have easily just made slightly bigger bezels to hide the notch, like a smaller iPad. There are some videos of a jailbroken iPhone that they made some sort of app that continuously covers up the notch.

So what have you done, picked up a phone in a store, stared at the notch and decided you don't like it?

Once you actually start using the phone and concentrating on what's on the screen, you won't even notice there's a notch there.

Is it so terrible to implement a temporary, interim solution for problems we can't fully solve yet?

We can't make these devices all screen yet, so for now we're making them almost all-screen.

They'll get rid of it when there's a better solution, but right now there isn't.

It's just the slow and imperfect march of technology, and hardly worthy of the venom it receives.

From my (admittedly limited) experience, it generally only receives venom from people who've never used it.

Friends who are android users used to ridicule my iPhone with a notch but they were the same people who spat venom when apple removed the headphone jack. Strange, they very rarely mention either now :D

I have used the iPhone 12 (my work phone) for over a year and yet here I still am drawn to that notch. I hate when people say, “oh he just looked at one one in a store” or “just use the damn phone.“ I have been using the phone for over a year. Id bet these same people who just love their notched phones would be the first in line to grab the notchless phone if it were available.

Of course we would - an all-screen, notchless phone would be better - once the technology makes that possible.

I guess I'm lucky that my first smart phone ever is one with a notch and I'm not in a position to be obsessing about a design that I was used to prior to it.
Anyway, I just don't have enough extra hours in the day to spare worrying about it.
How fortunate am I!

I was just curious and had a look at OP's post history.

Woof.

He has been griping about the notch, non stop, since 2017.

Splitrail, you are fortunate indeed.

If the trade off to notch free was losing face ID, I’ll take the notch every day. Face ID is far superior to touch ID. Also the notch is smaller than a home button so I just think of it as less of a notch out of the screen and more it has two tabs brought up into the bezel to make a somewhat useful purpose out of otherwise deadspace.

When the iPhone 12 Pro Max was released, I upgraded from the 8 Plus and I noticed the notch for a whole 10 minutes, then it kind of just disappeared.
