Basically, I was hoping there was an option to push my email every time I receive one as up to date as possible, without having to tap Mail every time to see if I got any. So say like a text message, where it just tells you right when you receive one.

Yahoo mail does push apparantly.
I use Gmail and set the iPhone to check every 15 mins, do you really need an email quicker than that?
Also, when you get a new email, the icon should show you the number of unread emails the same way SMS icon tells you about txt messages. You don't actually need to go into the app to check for unread messages.
If you are talking about a work email system that is using MS Exchange then the iPhone will get push facilities by connecting to that.

The only way that your email will be "pushed" to you instantly is if your email provider offers push as one of its services. Yahoo Mail, Apple's MobileMe, and a few others offer it.
Otherwise, you'll have to set your preferences to "fetch" new mail, which can be in 15 minute intervals, at the fastest.

Just to iterate what the others have said here, whether you have push email or not there is no need to keep opening the Mail app to check for mail, if you have set the auto-check times right, if you want near-push choose the lowest value, the icon will update automatically no matter what you're doing with your iPhone. It will send email as soon as you click send, which usually (I believe) triggers a "receive" check anyway, if not you'll not have that long before the iPhone undertakes its next scheduled send and receive check anyway.
The thing is, I don't see the fetch time option on the iphone. Help please.
EDIT: Ok, nevermind, I feel hella dumb. I was constantly looking through Mail setting and saw Fetch under WiFi. Thank you.

"Settings" app > "Fetch New Data" > Select the amount of time you want Mail to check for new messages.
