In iMessages it seems like the messages at the top of the screen are "faded" out. Is there anyway to remove this effect so all messages look the same regardless of their position on the screen?

As in they have a lighter background color? That's by design and there are no end user controls over it provided in iOS.

Yeah the ones at the top of the screen have the lighter background color and it fades in as you scroll down.

I find it very distracting and wish they would let you turn that off. Oh well.

Yes you can turn this off. It will effect other aspects of iOS though. Go to Settings—>General—>Accessibility—>Increase Contrast—> Toggle on Reduce Transparency
Edit: Looks like this no longer has the desired effect you are looking for. Sorry, this used to work.

None of my iMessages are faded at the top.

Wait I take that back. You're talking about the blue text bubble, mine does that.
