Is there a world leather shortage?

Could be. Hobby Lobby didn't have any spiked leather dog collars or ball-gags, either.

Not since Apple stopped using leather for some of their apps after OS X Lion.
Not sure, but my guess would be a refreshed line of bands is in the works. In the US, some of the leather loop models are available, but many of the classic and modern buckle models are either unavailable or sold out. This is true both on the Apple Store site as well as third party retailers like Best Buy.
All joking aside, I wish I'd had the chance to nab the Marigold or the Red Classic Buckle in 38mm. I was lucky enough to get the Marine Blue as a gift, and I love the band enough that I'd have gotten either of those other colors. Wonder what the refresh will bring.

Back to a more serious comment on the OP's post, I will say that everytime I've looked for a few of the colors I like in the leather band, it never seems to be in stock and couldn't even be ordered. Have wondered if they are discontinuing them, changing suppliers or what. I even called an Apple store to inquire about when they would be coming in stock or if they were discontinued and couldn't get an answer, just keeping checking back. Very frustrating.
Apple has new band selections on the website now. The Marigold and Red Classic leather bands will be available to purchase (along with a number of other discontinued colors and styles) through BestBuy. Saw both colors as listed coming soon. Target will get a selection of them as well but seems like a tiny subset as they will also sell some of the new ones.
I have one or two leather bands that I looked for a number of weeks ago myself on Apple's site and guess I'll have to buy them from BestBuy now. Rather have bought them from Apple if I had the choice still. Regular retail pricing btw.
I think the discontinued bands that are "coming soon" at Best Buy will likely disappear.
Not sure I understand your thinking. Disappear as in quickly snapped up by purchasers or not materializing there for sale? I'm thinking that like the 'refurbed' watches I think they sold, Apple has some deal with BestBuy (and Target and others overseas) for the discontinued bands.
