is there a laptop bag but a smaller size that's as small as the 11 inch Air but is not vertical? i want a regular horizontal laptop bag but smaller than the usual ones that fit the 13 inch laptops.

Problem with vertical bags is that it's hard to get (smaller) things in and out of them. Horizontal bags on the other hand it's very easy to access your phone, usb drives whatever ... deep/vertical bags are more frustrating to use in my experience.
Plus, I'm still not really into the 'man bag' look, vertical bags, even the muzetto look like man bag/purses, (imo).
Horizontal bags, like messengers look okay, as do backpacks.
It's just hard to find a small messenger bag that the 11 or 13" doesn't disappear in. Timbuk2 is the only place I've found anything decent so far. Their Eula, xtra small and small Messengers work well for the iPad/MBA's and some accessories.
The Ristretto and Imago from Tom Bihn I didn't like. STM small Scout is a lint, hair and magnet to anything that's on a floor and Airport floors are dirty! Poor choice of material is all. They call it 'waxed canvas' but it's not very waxed until Timbuk2's waxed canvas which has an excellent coating that doesn't pick lint or even leak water.
It's surprising the amount of people who look for the perfect bag or case for their notebooks, ipads, iphones etc. They're hard to find, it's unfortunate manufacturers don't listen to their customer base more.

timbuk2 messenger bag 12" has a laptop sleeve area that fits the 11" macbook air perfectly.
very compact, no way a 13" can fit in there, but still room for file folders, ac charger, sun glasses, snacks, small water bottle, etc. and pockets for keys, business cards, and usb/ethernet/monitor adapters... love it
