Hey, I'm looking for an app that shows how many unread mail messages I have in the menu bar. I'm cleaning up my dock which means that I won't be able to see the mail icon anymore, which I only look at to see if I have any new messages.

Thanks.
OA

PS, it's better if it's freeware, but it's not essential.

If you don't have mail open, it will not check for messages.

If you have mail open, it's icon WILL be in the dock.

If you have some how figure out how to haev mail open without it being in the dock, just turn on sound alert, and at least you can find out when you get a new message.

Right, but sometimes you're distracted and don't hear the sound. Also I've cleaned up the dock and hidden it so I don't see the mail icon in the dock unless I unhid the dock and yeah. I'm just looking for an elegant solution in the menu bar.

One app I've finally found is MailTicker. It isn't being developed anymore I don't think, and isn't officially supported for Mac OS 10.2. I've used it for a couple of hours and it seems stable enough for me.

I'm still looking for a better solution tho', are there any out there?

I'd love to have something in the top menu bar, too. One of the few things I actually miss about OS9 was having Entourage flash its icon in the top right when I had mail.

But I'm full steam ahead with Mail, despite its obvious inferiority to Entourage. So I'm hoping, maybe, that Panther will offer some fixes, and some fine soul will offer the notification feature that Over Achiever is talking about.

i'm confused at how you are able to read any mail messages if you've disabled the mail icon from showing up in the dock. normally, when you do a little hack like that, it disables all of the programs menubar features AND key commands. how do you bring up your inbox?

i see...i was a little confused at when he said "cleaned up my dock and hidden it"

i thought "hidden it" meant hid the icon from being in the dock.

i don't see why you can't just look at your dock periodically to see if you have new mail...is it really that important that you have to see immediately if you have new mail? or are you just one of those people that is so excited to get new mail that they must know right away :D
