Is there an easy way to mute mac when display goes to sleep?

I tried googling this but couldnt find anything that doesnt require me a purchase and I'm really surprised.

My iMac goes to sleep when I dont use it, but for some reason it continues to make sounds when notifications come in. It's not what I expect it to do? Is this normal?

That is normal; the idea is that if you're, for example, playing music then you'd still want to be able to play it with the display off.

I'm afraid I don't know how to accomplish what you're after.
