Or is this feature unique to Mac OS X?

Also, how many apps use it? Any more apart from Pixelmator, Core Image Fun House and iMaginator?

No-one?

I'm thinking that use of this technology should make it easier to develop a Photoshop competitor for the Mac, assuming of course that it is unique to OS X.

It is unique to OS X. And there are a number of image editors that take advantage of it.

Preview, Acorn, Pixelmator, etc.

If I had a guess at it. It would be something in the directX Microsoft uses.

Thanks for the responses.

I was wondering about DirectX but isn't that just the graphics rendering engine in Windows? It doesn't have all those filters or the ability to create new ones does it?

filters are all just top level addons, its nice to have, but the fundamental tools are already there in DX. It wouldn't take MS a month to add a bunch of filters. That is, if they think its necessary.
