Comcast just called me to say they are bumping my bill from 80 bucks a month to 170 because my promo rate expired. I really only watch HBO and don't want to miss out on new Eps of True Blood.

Go into the iTunes store. Click TV shows. See if it is available. It is. So it will play on :apple:TV.

Several other HBO series are available as well.

The downside: if you are looking for the newest shows as soon as they come out on HBO, you won't get them this way. You'll need to think about some alternative to Comcast. Maybe a cheap DISH rate + HBO? I think you can buy a minimal DISH package and then add HBO.

Also, there is an HBO-GO app for iDevices, but I'm pretty sure it requires an "old fashioned" subscription via cable or satt.

Since Showtime and HBO are subscription services, they want you to subscribe to their services so they don't release their new content on Amazon or iTunes--or anywhere else as far as I know. Kind of stuck subscribing through your cable/dish provider. I subscribe to both just to watch the new shows.

there is the 3rd option to just download it off bittorrent tho bad really they aren't leaving me with much a choice. How can they charge $170 for Cable and internet. These industries need better regulation.

I agree, and Comcast is one of the worst of them. I was in the same situation as you are a few months ago. I was paying about $160/month with no movie channels at all for cable and internet. I threatened to leave them for U-Verse, and told them how much they were quoting me. It took about 20 minutes, but they locked me into a year contract for $91 and change. With HBO as well. It sucks, but with these cable companies you really have to stay on them. They are scammers who will try to get away with as much as they can.

I don't want to voice my opinion here or hijack the thread, but a guy I work with just got a DCMA notice from Comcast. His kid torrented an HBO show the day after it aired.

Also had this happen to me nearly every time I downloaded a True Blood torrent. That's why I stream now - via XBMC addons. Most things are available pretty quickly after they air.

I don't know why you are all using torrents (which are obviously easy to track) when a subscription to a Usenet forum service is anonymous and faster. (no need to wait for peers)

what usenet forum do you suggest

I've been using Usenet forums for years.

Recently (in the past decade) many ISP's have been censoring and removing binary files (programs, movies, music, etc).

Subscription based usenet providers who do not censor or track submissions or downloads to Usenet have proliferated due to that issue.

Personally, I use Astraweb.com. (I am not an agent nor affiliated with said firm) The monthly fee is nominal and believe me you can find just about anything on Usenet. :D

You do need a newsgroup reader to read/download forums and files and I suggest Unison. (it's shareware)

YMMV but absolutely forget about torrents if you want anonymity regarding downloads.

I don't know why anyone downloads at all when you can stream....all from the comfort of your couch and without having to use a computer or wait for it to download. The concept of needing have even a digital copy of media is becoming a thing of the past, IMHO.

I hear you but some things you/some might want to get aren't available by the corporations that spoon feed the streams.

There are obvious pros to having the tangible file. (watching on an airplane that doesnt have wifi for example or getting a full quality file with HD 1080p stream and lossless audio that I can choose to down mix vs. a third party deciding what quality I get)

We could go back and forth but I'll take anonymous downloads and tangible files vs. hoping Netflix or whatever has <insert want/need> available when I want it.

I was mostly referring to Navi-X, Icefilms & the like. It's rare when I can't find what I am looking for. Certailnly a local copy of media has it's advantages - but there are fewer than there were just a couple years ago. I do download (or rip from DVD) some things for the reasons you specified but as wifi becomes more prevalent and bandwidth improves....I can see that need going away as well.

It would be nice if HBO GO were a service that I could get separately from my Satellite package. That would be worth $5 a month to me, easy.
