Since App Store first launched in 2008 I've always kept all my iPhone/iPad apps in my iTunes library and also kept a backup of them on a external HDD. But it just suddenly dawned on my today, Is there any point now with iCloud?

I have a MacBook Air with 128GB SSD so storage is precious, am I right in thinking I can just delete all my Apps from iTunes now that I have the ability to download them again and also backup my phone via the cloud?

I just want to make sure I'm not overlooking something, I hope I'm not. I'll be able to save 4-5GB on my SSD if thats the case.

Thanks.

If you sync your iPhone with iTunes, the apps installed on the iPhone will be synced back and stored on you Macbook Air.
No point in keeping apps you don't use on the computer since you can just download them again if you need them.

You're overlooking a couple of items:
  • If an App is no longer being sold, it will no longer be available to download.
  • App updates can be bad. I had to go to Time Machine to restore an older version of an App a couple of times.
Having said that, if you have apps on your computer you no longer use at all, definitely remove them from your iTunes library.
