is there any reason for getting Apple RAM ?

OKay - I ordered my MBP with 4GB of ram (being lazy), but now you are all giving me grief for wasting the cash.

I guess I could change the order (which might delay it) - but is it a dead certainty that getting decent 3 party ram is just as good as Apple ?

Is there any downside ??
 
Yes...there are several 3rd party vendors that you can choose from and the quality is just as good as Apple's. Also, it is not a difficult install, either. A monkey could do it ;)

Save your money for something else you need and buy aftermarket RAM (crucial, OWC, etc.). Do a search here for RAM vendors and you will see the difference in price. I personally bought RAM from here based on reviews from here and other sites and I couldn't be happier.
 
The only downside to non-apple ram is when you need to take it applecare they might bother you about it. I have always put the original in, if nothing else to help prevent they blaming whatever problem on the ram.
 
The only reason you would get apple ram is if you value the fact that its done for you over saving 400$
 
Apple will probably give you crap about aftermarket ram if you need to send your laptop in as was said before. I can speak from personal experience here. Just 2 weeks ago they tried to blame my "faulty aftermarket part" (my ram) on a video/screen issue.

The only problem is I've never had a problems w/ the ram or the machine and i've had them both for 3 years. Plus my ram uses the same ram chips apple was using at the time (samsung) Needless to say i nipped that in the bud and had them fix the problem.

Just remember to buy some name brand stuff. The only no-name brand i can reccommend is G.Skill form newegg.com. Just maxed out my cousin's macbook pro w/ it and its GREAT and has tons of 5 star (egg) reviews from customers across the board.
 
For academia you have to go through a long chain of commands to get approval for new computer orders. Specifying that you intend for IT to upgrade your computer with ram that you buy from a third party would not pass along the lines of command. And if it would, you would have to justify it, formally with letters from consultants (A pain, and slim chance that it will work, due to dealing with multiple warranties and the like). In cases such as these it is simpler to pay the premium, as the processes is shorter and less hassle.

-I'm only referring to research labs at universities, the process might be different for other areas of academia.

-In your case, I don't think that I can find justification other than dealing with one warranty

Don't worry to much about that problem. I brought in my PowerBook for repairs and no complaints about 3rd party RAM.

I just email the apple rep who took the sale and asked him to change it back to the standard 2 GB.

I HOPE you guys are now satisfied !

Well, let's see. You can buy any of the following to augment your Apple experience:

  1. An External Screen - Dell, Samsung, HP, Apple
  2. External Hard Drives
  3. External KB and mouse
  4. External Speakers
  5. A Stand - mStand, Griffin Elevator, etc

You get the idea and obviously all these additional toys are for home/office use.

You can also pick up Leopard when it comes out or get a new shirt, buy your girlfriend/boyfriend a gift or take em out to dinner. Hell, you don't even have to spend the money you saved :D

its reduced the bill by £370 (see how expensive apple is in the UK!)

bear in mind this is AFTER a 14 % student discount as well.

I was not even aware that there were 2GB ram chips compatible with the MacBook Pro. Please point me to a link?

I buy Apple RAM. Call me crazy and lazy, but if anything goes wrong then it's just easier to know that everything inside my casing is Apple and that, for any fault, there's only one point of contact to sort it out.

I appreciate that Apple's RAM is not good value for money, but it does seem to be good stuff and, if you're ordering BTO, I think getting Apple RAM is perfectly acceptable :)

Now, if you were going to fill up a Mac Pro with 16GB of RAM then perhaps getting it from Apple would be something worth arguing about...

Don't want an external screen - trying to save space
Have an external hard drive already
have a wireless might mouse - but Yes I'll get the new wireless keyboard
no need for speakers - i use airport express plugged into my hifi
Yes - I'll get the mStand + I'll get Leopard

... even so, still money left:(

umm.. No, i hope you're satisfied. You made a purchasing mistake, and we told you a way to correct it. We did it for YOU, not us.

Anyway, i recommend/vouch for crucial ram and/or owc ram (otherworldcomputing.com) ;)


Edit @ CanadaRAM : i agree but a small part of me says keeping the original Apple branded ram to use to test to see if the 3rd party ram is bad and/or to use when you send your machine back to apple would be a good idea (read: buying the smallest amount of apple ram you can). But since apple regards ram as a user replaceable part would that mean that any ram that went bad and may have messed something up apple would fix under applecare, no? (i mean the ram, not something the user does in process of changing the ram)

Well, if the money is burning a hole in your pocket, then get:
Airport Extreme Base Station, Apple TV, or iPod =)
