I am wanting it on my 2006 iMac. I've heard it's possible. Just don't know how difficult it is for sure or what all I need to do.

OS X El Capitan on Unsupported Macs

However, there is one major issue, which is lack of GPU kexts and acceleration. Because of that I had to limit my iMac6,1 (2006 24") to OS X Mountain Lion.

What does that do? I would even accept Mavericks. I like the ability to message from my 2015 macbook pro with retina and being able to actually use apps. I cant even use pages or evernote!

You can use it without GPU acceleration, but some apps won't work properly and performance is generally pretty bad. OS X Mountain Lion is the last version that can be installed without this limitation currently, and it's only slightly newer than the last supported version (Mac OS X Lion).

Sending/receiving iMessages should work even in Mountain Lion. iWork '09 also, but you have to export files in compatibility mode if you use the newer versions.

Thank you for your input. How difficult would it be to get Mountain Lion running on my late 2006 Imac? Apple said it isn't compatiable so I would have to do some sort of work around. I got this Imac for $40 at a yard sale last week so it wasnt a bad buy. At least I can use Apple Music on it. I found that Firefox works much better than Safari, because it's actually updated.

You can use MacPostFactor to get Mountain Lion on you 2006 iMac. Follow the instructions here and you'll have OS X Mountain Lion on your Unsupported Mac.

Thank you! Is that the absolute latest OS that you would recommend me running?
It is the latest I recommend if you need Graphics Acceleration. Neither I nor the main developer of MCPF could figure out a potent issue with the OpenGL frameworks in newer OSs so if you don't mind the performance hiccup, you can try Mavericks or Yosemite. Just proceed with this setback in mind.

This late 2006 Imac is actually pretty darn snappy on Lion. So in layman's terms you are telling me it is a lagfest?

In Mavericks and Yosemite, yes. Mountain Lion is perfectly fine

Where do I go about finding a copy of mountain lion for the prerequisite to put in the file? I already bought a redemption code to put Lion on this computer from Apple. Since this computer technically isn't compatable with anything else I don't know where to get it?

I had to use the older MLPostFactor tool because installer created with MacPostFactor would not boot on my 2006 iMac6,1. YMMV to the OP, of course.

You need a Mountain Lion-supported Mac to download it. A 2015 MacBook Pro is too new, unfortunately.

So in order for this to work on my Lion Imac I am going to have to hunt someone down that has a mountain lion imac?

Pretty much if you want to get the installer legitimately from the App Store. It has to be a Mac supported by Mountain Lion, but not necessarily running it. Any Mac late 2013 and after is too new.

Well crap, I don't have any way of getting ahold of that. Everyone I know that has a mac has Mavericks or later.
